Penguins suffer first defeat in volleyball

PITTSBURGH

The Youngstown State volleyball team dropped its first match of the season in five sets to Duquesne on Saturday evening to conclude a busy weekend. The set scores were 25-22, 19-25, 25-19, 13-25, 10-15.

The Penguins, who began Saturday with a four-set win over Indiana State, are 6-1 on the season including Friday night wins over UMass Lowell and Robert Morris as part of the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational.

Senior middle blocker Shannon Watson had 14 kills and a match-high 10 blocks, and Lexi Egler registered her third straight double-double with 13 kills and 17 digs in the loss to Duquesne. Val Jeffery had 42 assists and 11 digs to earn all-tournament team honors along with Watson.

Strollo is guest speaker for Curbstone Coaches

The Curbstone Coaches’ guest speaker Monday will be Ron Strollo, Youngstown State’s Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. The group will meet at noon at Lucianno’s Caf in Austintown. The public is welcome.

Steelers sign 5-year deal with DB Allen

PITTSBURGH

The Steelers signed cornerback Cortez Allen to a new five-year contract that will keep him with the team through the 2018 season, the team announced Saturday. Allen is in his fourth NFL season after being selected by the Steelers in the fourth round (128th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft. He has appeared in 44 regular-season games and made 11 starts.

Rangers say Darvish’s season is finished

ARLINGTON, Texas

Yu Darvish’s season is over. Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said Saturday the 28-year-old won’t pitch again this year. The three-time All-Star has not appeared in a game since Aug. 9 due to elbow inflammation.
