Penn St. 21, Akron 3

Christian Hackenberg threw for three touchdowns and 319 yards and Penn State was able to overcome its own offensive inconsistency. The Nittany Lions (2-0) totaled 425 yards total offense but two interceptions and a fumble kept Akron (1-1) within reach until late in the game. The game featured 82 passes and 527 passing yards as opposed to just 175 on the ground. Akron quarterback Kyle Pohl was 24 of 46 for 208 yards but the Zips were unable to hit anything deep against the Nittany Lions. Akron tried to cling to life in the fourth quarter with a 15-play drive that covered 67 yards and featured eight Pohl completions but ended at Penn State’s 13 with four straight incompletions.
Iowa 17, Ball State 13
IOWA CITY, IOWA
Iowa’s Jake Duzey caught a go-ahead 12-yard touchdown pass from Jake Rudock with a minute left. Rudock threw for 322 yards and completed 9 of 11 passes on the Hawkeyes’ two scoring drives in the final six minutes. Iowa (2-0) forced a fumble on Ball State’s final possession to end the game. Ball State (1-1) turned two fumbles into 10 points, but the Cardinals couldn’t get a stop late. The Hawkeyes racked up 455 yards and 27 first downs.
Maryland 24, South Florida 17

C.J. Brown threw for 201 yards and two touchdowns and Avery Thompson recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a fourth-quarter TD. Marcus Leak scored on receptions of 10 and 44 yards for the Terrapins (2-0), who overcame six turnovers, including a pair of interceptions that stopped promising drives. Thompson’s TD put Maryland ahead for good with 12:25 remaining. Brad Craddock’s 23-yard field goal made it 24-17, and cornerback Alvin Hill’s late interception helped the Terrapins put it away.
Illinois 42, Western Kentucky 34
CHAMPAIGN, ILL.
Illinois quarterback Wes Lunt threw for three touchdowns and Taylor Barton returned an interception for a late score to secure a comeback win. Lunt was 35 of 50 with one interception for the Illini (2-0). Barton picked off Hilltopper quarterback Brandon Doughty in the fourth quarter for a 77-yard touchdown that put Illinois up 35-27. Illinois trailed 17-7 late in the second quarter on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Doughty to tight end Tyler Higbee.
Rutgers 38, Howard 25
PISCATAWAY, N.J.
Gary Nova threw four touchdowns and halfback Paul James had his second-straight three-touchdown game to lead Rutgers. Nova connected with James on scoring passes of 69 and 31 yards and added tosses of 38 yards to Leonte Carroo and 19 to John Tsimis as the Scarlet Knights (2-0) scored 31 straight first-half points to overcome an early deficit.
Minnesota 35, Middle Tennessee 24
MINNEAPOLIS
David Cobb had 29 carries for two touchdowns and a career-high 220 yards, the most for the program in nine years. Donnell Kirkwood also had a first-quarter touchdown run for the Golden Gophers (2-0), who rushed for 284 yards.
