South Dakota 41, William Penn 16

VERMILLION, S.D.

Sophomore Ryan Saeger made the most of his first start, running for two touchdowns. Saeger led a ground game that wore down the NAIA Statesmen in the second half. Saeger ran for 79 of the Coyotes’ 357 yards and completed 8 of 13 passes for 111 yards as the Coyotes (1-1) shook off the effects of a season-opening 62-13 loss to FBS power Oregon. Saeger started in place of Kevin Earl, who broke a thumb in the Oregon game. He scored on runs of 6 and 1 yards. Joining Saeger on the ground with a touchdown each was Trevor Bouma with 115 yards and Jasper Sanders with 110 yards. Kicker Miles Bergner added a pair of field goals and Jake Leohr returned a fumble 46 yards for a touchdown to close out the scoring.

Oklahoma State 40, Missouri State 23

STILLWATER, OKLA.

Daxx Garman went 16 of 26 for 244 yards and two touchdowns to help lead Oklahoma State. Kierra Harris threw for 206 yards and two touchdowns on 14-of-21 passing, and ran for 45 yards, for Missouri State (1-1), which falls to 1-30 against FBS opponents. Oklahoma State excelled on special teams, blocking three Missouri State kicks — a field goal attempt, a point-after attempt and a punt — in the first half to set a new school record.

Indiana St 49, Tennessee Tech 14

TERRE HAUTE, IND.

Mike Perish threw three touchdown passes and ran for a fourth while LeMonte Booker had three rushing scores. Perish was 26 of 34 for 383 yards. Gary Owens had 199 yards receiving on six receptions for the Sycamores (1-1). Indiana State moved out to a 28-0 lead after a 37-yard touchdown by Booker early in the third quarter. Tennessee Tech (1-1) clawed back quickly as Jordan Patrick blocked a punt and recovered it for a score and Ladarius Vanlier added a 72-yard punt return touchdown. Perish responded with scores of 31 yards to Owens and a 9-yarder to Jamar Brown, pushing the lead back to 28.

S. Dakota St 44, Cal Poly 18

BROOKINGS, S.D.

South Dakota State needed each of Zach Lujan TD passes and all of Zach Zenner’s rushing yards to beat Cal Poly and end a three-game losing streak to the Mustangs. Lujan threw three touchdown passes for the Jackrabbits (1-1). Zenner ran for 193 yards and a touchdown. Zenner, who has rushed for 2,000 yards in two straight seasons, came in needing 115 yards to become the all-time career rushing leader in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. SDSU outscored the Mustangs 28-6 in the second half. The Jacks piled up 502 yards of total offense. SDSU struck first when Lujan tossed a 36-yard TD pass to Trevor Wesley with 7:22 left in the first quarter and Justin Syrovatka tacked on the PAT. It was Lujan’s first career touchdown pass. Chris

Brown led the Mustangs (0-2) with 104 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, while completing 16 of 21 passes for 202 yards.

S. Illinois 38, E. Illinois 21

CHARLESTON, ILL.

Malcolm Agnew ran for 147 yards and three touchdowns while Mark Iannotti threw for two more. Trailing 21-14 in the third quarter, SIU (2-0) scored 24 straight points to take control of the game and held Eastern Illinois scoreless in the second half to cement the win. Agnew had 18 carries in the game, punching in scores from the 2, 32 and 24. Iannotti was 25 of 34 for 233 yards and an interception.
