The traditional blessing of animals celebrates the life of St. Francis of Assisi, whose feast day is Oct. 4. St. Francis is known for his love of all creatures.

Day of prayer

LIBERTY

Unity Centre for Spiritual Living, 1226 Naylor Lloyd Road, will conduct a 24-hour prayer vigil from 7 p.m. Wednesday to 7 p.m. Thursday on the theme “We Are the Light of the World: Let Your Light Shine!”

The vigil will start with a prayer service and conclude with a candlelight walk to the Angel Garden, where a closing prayer will take place.

The local church will join Silent Unity, an international, transdenominational, 24/7 prayer ministry, for the 21st annual Unity World Day of Prayer.

Anniversary event

YOUNGSTOWN

The Office of Pro-Life, Marriage and Family Ministry of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown will sponsor a wedding anniversary celebration to honor couples who are observing their 25th, 40th, 50th or more anniversaries in 2014 at 2 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist in Canton.

Couples planning to attend must register at their parish office by Sept. 19.

The celebration will include Mass with Bishop George V. Murry, renewal of marriage vows, a personalized certificate for each couple and a reception for couples and their families.

Rally Day event

A Rally Day kickoff to celebrate family Christian education will be at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 550 N. Broad St.

Children from 3 years old through sixth grade and their parents are welcome.

There will be a blessing of backpacks at 5 p.m. today and 8:15 and 10:45 a.m. Sunday.

Ministry fair

Poland Presbyterian Church, 2 Poland Manor, will sponsor a ministry fair from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. Sunday in fellowship hall to showcase committees and ministries including small-group ministries and Christian education.
