Youngstown man arrested after spitting on cop

A man who was arrested Friday morning for running from and spitting on a Youngstown State University police officer was removed from his arraignment later in the day.

Municipal Judge Elizabeth Kobly ordered 56-year-old Floyd McKinney of Martin Luther King Boulevard removed after he shouted at her as he was arraigned on a felony charge of assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, carrying a concealed weapon and obstructing official business.

A pair of YSU officers on patrol around Wick Park spotted McKinney at about 1:30 a.m. Friday sleeping on a park bench, reports said. When they went to tell him the park was closed and he would have to leave, he refused to give his name, then ran down Park Avenue toward Elm Street carrying a large radio, reports said.

As he ran, McKinney stopped abruptly and whirled into a fighting stance holding the radio as a weapon, reports said. One officer pulled his gun and another pulled his baton and they ordered McKinney to drop the radio, which he did, but then he continued running.

Reports said McKinney fell down in a front yard on Illinois Avenue and officers were able to catch him there and handcuff him but he resisted efforts to be taken back to a cruiser.
