Spartans soccer team beats Ursuline


In the season opener at YSU, the Spartans defeated Ursuline 3-1.

Sophomore Robb Lewis scored the inaugural goal of the year and then assisted on senior Vince Mancini’s game winning score. Junior Andrew Gable increased Boardman’s advantage off an assist from senior Zach Fryda. Senior goal keeper Brian Fryda registered four saves, while a solid defensive effort by juniors Adam Deeley and Aaron DunLany and seniors Adam Calhoun and Zach Fryda prevented an Irish attack.

In the junior varsity match, Boardman prevailed 4-0. Two goals by senior Christopher Walters and one from sophomore Dillon Cailor gave the Spartans a commanding lead. Freshman Sean Buck’s up-field pass to the Boardman offense was mishandled by the Irish and resulted in a goal to round out the scoring. Juniors Kevin Durkin and Liam McCarthy had two and one saves, respectively, for Boardman.

Boardman secured a 2-0 shutout at Champion High School. Junior Andrew Gable scored off an assist from fellow junior Adam Deeley and then assisted senior Zach Stamp’s goal midway through the second half. Senior Brian Fryda tallied six saves in the victory.

The junior varsity Spartans also shut out the Golden Flashes by a score of 5-0. Junior Chris Dailey opened the scoring for Boardman 20 minutes into the game and was quickly followed by freshman Jacob Smotzer. Senior reserve Christopher Walters then knocked in two goals in the span of 10 seconds to give the Spartans a 4-0 halftime advantage. Smotzer rounded out the scoring late in the game for Boardman.
