Civil War lecture at the Canfield Historical Society
The Canfield Historical Society’s fall lecture series will begin on Sept. 11 at 7 p.m., when Gary Pilcher will present a lecture titled “Survey of Civil War Battlefields.”
Pilcher is the senior vice president at Farmers Trust Company where he serves as the compliance officer, as well as the trust and estate administrative officer. He is a member of the Ohio State and Mahoning County Bar Associations, and writes for “Legalines” (the Mahoning County Bar Association news magazine) and for the Daily Legal News. He earned a J.D. degree from Rutgers Law School. He is also an active member of the Animal Law Committee of the Ohio State Bar.
Pilcher has an interest in history, particularly the American Civil War, in which several of his ancestors fought. He has traveled to nearly every major battlefield at least once, including the four-day 150th Celebration of the Battle of Gettysburg in 2013. His commentary will cover these travels and photographs he has taken: obscure sites and facts (Drury’s Bluff, the Hunley, the Crater, the Swamp Angel); the most noteworthy events (Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Petersburg); and the best-marked or aesthetically appealing sites (Gettysburg, Shiloh, Lookout Mountain), to name a few.
This free lecture will take place at the Canfield Historical Society Bond House. The Bond House is located at 44 West Main Street in Canfield, across from the Canfield library. The lecture is appropriate for all ages and is open to anyone who would like to attend. No reservations are needed. A question and answer period and a short social time with refreshments are also provided after the lecture.
The lecture series will also include a lecture by Cynthia Anderson on Oct. 9 titled “History of the Butler Institute of American Art” and Laura Zeh, Curator of the Canfield Historical Society, will present “Select Pieces from the CHS Collection” on Nov. 13.
