Reese commits to The College of Wooster

Cardinal Mooney’s McKenzie Reese has committed to play volleyball at The College of Wooster. Reese, a four year starter for the Cards was named to the All District second team as a junior, when she averaged 10 kills a game and the Mooney squad reached the district finals with more than twenty wins. Reese was named captain as a junior and again in her senior year.

Jordan Robert picks Clarkson University

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown Phantom’s Affiliate list forward Jordan Robert has secured his college hockey future by committing to Clarkson University. The 16-year-old will not have to travel far, as Clarkson is just 30 minutes from his hometown of Massena, N.Y.

Robert was added to the affiliate list this summer after going undrafted in May’s USHL Draft. Once Robert completes his USHL career, he will be the fourth Phantom to skate for Clarkson.

Deer hunting clinic takes place Saturday

The Hubbard Conservation Club is offering the State of Ohio Hunter Education Course on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will take place at 1760 Wick-Campbell Rd in Hubbard. The clinic is sponsored by the Department of Natural Resources and is designed for every age and ability. To register, call M. Syersak 330-550-8128.

Weekly turkey shoots start Sept. 11

The Hubbard Conservation Club resumes its weekly Turkey Shoots starting Thursday September 11th at 7p.m., They continue every Thursday evening until further notice. Price is just $2 per round, up to 10 rounds per night, with 50% paid out for each round. Bring your own 12-16-20 gauge shotgun (standard 680 choke size for 12 gauge), but ammo is provided by the club. Come for fun and safe shooting skills development before hunting seasons.

Michael Mannozzi wins sixth US title

Boardman graduate Michael Mannozzi won the United States of America Track and Field National One Hour Race Walk on August 10. The 28-year-old walked a distance of 12, 525 meters for the individual win. His team, Shore Athletic Club, won first placed as well, completing 34,288 meters between three people.

East Palestine Invite takes place Saturday

The 2014 East Palestine Rotary Cross-Country Invitational will be held on Saturday at East Palestine City Park. There will be four races starting with the middle school girls at 10:00 a.m, the middle school boys race at 10:30 a.m., the high school girls will race at 11:00 a.m. and the final race of the day will be the high school boys at 11:45 a.m.

Serena Williams beats Pennetta, into semis

After a bad-as-can-be start, dropping the first three games, Serena Williams quickly turned things around and stretched her U.S. Open winning streak to 19 matches to get back to the semifinals.

Considered the best server in women’s tennis, the No. 1-seeded Williams was broken twice in a row at the outset Wednesday night, before taking complete control for a 6-3, 6-2 victory over 11th-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy.

Williams is bidding to become the first woman with three consecutive U.S. Open titles since Chris Evert took four in a row from 1975-78. The 32-year-old American also is trying to pull even with Evert and Martina Navratilova at 18 Grand Slam singles trophies.

On Friday, Williams will meet 17th-seeded Ekaterina Makarova of Russia.
