BOARDMAN
Technicians from Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley and Safe Kids Mahoning Valley, in partnership with Sweeney Chevrolet, are offering free car-seat checks from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Sweeney Chevrolet, 8010 Market St.
In a study observing the misuse of 3,442 child- restraint systems, approximately 73 percent of car seats showed at least one critical misuse, according to Safe Kids USA.
Child safety-seat guidelines frequently are updated based upon continuous safety studies. Technicians will be available to assist with installations, discuss these guidelines and provide literature. Appointments are requested. Call 330-729-1387.
Special meeting set

The Howland school board will meet at 6:30 p.m. today for a special meeting with an executive session at the administration offices, 8200 South St. SE.
Seminar planned
LIBERTY
A seminar on “Hypertension and Transplantation in the African-American Community” is set for 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at St. Mark Catholic Church, 3560 Logan Way.
Speakers are Dr. Charles Modlin, a renal transplant surgeon and urologist at the Cleveland Clinic, and Dr. Nathaniel Doe, a Youngstown-based, board-certified nephrologist.
The event is sponsored by the Mahoning Valley Cancer Coalition and funded with a grant from the Ohio Commission on Minority Health. For tickets, call Shirley Grace at 330-788-5313.
Events at DQ stores
YOUNGSTOWN
On Saturday, from 11a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Cornersburg DQ store, 3555 S. Meridian Road, and on Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Austintown DQ store, 146 N. Canfield-Niles Road, patrons can use a bounce house for a donation to be given to Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley during the hospital’s radiothon Sept. 17-19.
Cornersburg and Austintown DQs last week presented Akron Children’s over $5,200 raised on Miracle Treat day from the sale of Blizzards and Miracle Balloons.
Sidewalk closing
YOUNGSTOWN
The sidewalk and front area of Warehouse 50, 47 W. Federal St., will be closed for the Party on the Plaza from 4 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday. It is the last Party on the Plaza event of the summer.
Outdoor event
WARREN
The Trumbull County Soil and Water Conservation District will have its annual “Community Waters Festival” outdoor educational event at Perkins Park on Sept. 9 and 10. More than 300 fourth-graders from Warren City Schools’ four K-8 schools will attend.
The program will provide learning stations at the downtown amphitheater and elsewhere in Perkins Park. Students will learn about water as a natural resource through interactive activities and presentations.
