WARREN

A 24-year-old woman suffered minor injuries after she reported being attacked and robbed by about eight young males at Draper Street and Niles Road Southeast at 10:30 p.m. Monday.

The woman said she was walking to the store when the males, age 17 to 20, approached her asking for money and asking her to buy marijuana. The victim didn’t respond, then two males approached her and started hitting her all over her body.

Moments later, all eight were kicking and hitting her on the ground, she said. She gave them cash and was able to get away.

Pizza driver robbed

WARREN

A Pizza Hut delivery driver reported being robbed at gunpoint Sunday night on North Feederle Avenue Southeast by a man who first asked the driver for change for a $5 bill.

The 21-year-old driver said he was walking up to a home when the man asked for change. The suspect pulled out a gun as the victim reached into his pocket for the change.

The suspect took about $35 in cash and the pizza, then ordered the driver back into his vehicle and to drive away while pointing the gun at his head.

Lots, roads closed

YOUNGSTOWN

Multiple parking lots and paved areas throughout Mill Creek Park will be closed temporarily for asphalt sealing and preventive maintenance beginning today.

The areas include East Golf Hike/Bike (U.S. Route 224 entrance), Newport Wetlands, and trails at Yellow Creek Park and Wick Recreation Area.

While the parking lots are closed, the facilities will remain open and accessible to the public.

The work will take approximately one week.

Open houses

BOARDMAN

The Boardman school district will host several open houses for parents and students Thursday at its elementary and middle schools.

West Boulevard Elementary will have an open house at 10 a.m. for kindergarten. Market Street Elementary will have one at 5:15 p.m. for fourth grade.

Center Middle School will host an open house at 7 p.m. for seventh and eighth grades.

Glenwood Middle School will have one at 7 p.m. for all grades.

Volunteers welcome

YOUNGSTOWN

Volunteers are invited to join Youngstown CityScape at Wick Park, 260 Park Ave. between Pennsylvania and Ohio avenues, from noon to 4 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to noon and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday to help build the new Wick Park Playground.

Volunteers are asked to come to the area behind the building in Wick Park. Parking is available on the side streets and also in the park. Volunteers, who will be working on building the playground along with some overall cleanup and painting, are advised to dress appropriately and bring water bottles. Some snacks and water will be available.

Post office to stay, reduce space

CORNERSBURG

The Cornersburg Post Office will remain in its current location at 3375 Canfield Road to provide retail counter service, but it will reduce the space it occupies after its current lease expires Sept. 29, a U.S. Postal Service spokesman said. The letter carriers who had been based there relocated to the downtown post office Aug. 23. The long line at the Cornersburg Post Office on Tuesday morning was due to heavier than usual activity while the counter was staffed with one clerk, as usual during morning hours, said David Van Allen, a postal spokesman in Cleveland.

Streets closed

YOUNGSTOWN

These streets will be affected from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Saturday, for St. Christine Church’s 5K run/walk event: Schenley Avenue between Kirk and Decamp roads, the northbound lane only between Canfield and Kirk roads; Kirk Road between Schenley and Bears Den Road; Oran Drive between Rexford Road and Normandy and Burma drives; and Hermosa Drive between Bears Den and Kirk.

Secondary roads affected by the race are Dogwood Drive, Skywae Drive, Arrowae Drive, Gladwae Drive, Rosewae Drive, Coral Sea Drive, Oran Drive, Burma Drive, Normandy Drive, Hermosa Drive, Coleman Drive, Gregory Avenue, Meredyth Drive and Nadyne Drive.

Residents will be allowed access with Youngstown Police Department assistance.

Roads to close for fundraiser

YOUNGSTOWN

These streets will be closed from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday to accommodate the 2014 End of Summer Tough-Man Competition and Fundraiser, sponsored by Rust Belt Brewing Co.

The streets closed are Commerce between Hazel and Phelps, with three lanes of Commerce closed and one lane eastbound remaining open.

Repaving begins

CAMPBELL

Construction workers began milling Robinson Road on Tuesday morning. Once milling is complete, the road will be repaved. City Administrator Judith Clement recommended drivers avoid Robinson Road until all construction work is complete. She said work will be completed in about one to two weeks, depending on weather.

Donation made

Home Savings Charitable Foundation donated $4,000 to Neighborhood Ministries to support after-school and summer programming for children from low-income families.

Neighborhood Ministries operates three neighborhood centers — the Kirwan Homes Community Center in Campbell, the Rockford Village Community Center on Youngstown’s East Side and the West Side Community Center, also in Youngstown.

It also manages a food-distribution program with sites throughout Mahoning County and serves as the administrative agency for Campbell Works for Children, a comprehensive social-service and ministry program that supports Campbell children, their families and their teachers.

Cancer 5K color run

The Yellow Brick Place Cancer Wellness Center’s Color vs. Cancer 5K Color Run/Walk is at 10 a.m. Sept. 21 at Austintown Township Park, 6600 Kirk Road.

A color run is an untimed event in which runners begin dressed in clean white T-shirts and pass through a color station every kilometer where they are blasted with dyed cornstarch.

Advance registration by Saturday includes a white shirt. The cost is $25 for individual runners and $20 per runners who are part of a team of four or more individuals. Race-day registration begins at 7:30 a.m. The cost is $30. T-shirt size and availability are not guaranteed.

Tailgating event

One Health Ohio is offering “Tailgating for Breast Cancer Awareness” from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Youngstown Community Health Center, 726 Wick Ave. For information, call 330-747-9551.

There will be raffles, vendors, gift baskets, educational stations, clinical breast exams, mammograms by the Tiffany Breast Care Center, live music by the Cody Gibson Band and refreshments.

The event, funded through the Crucial Catch Grant from the National Football League, is free and open to the public.
