Last month was the area’s 10th wettest August
YOUNGSTOWN
Last month was the 10th-wettest August in Mahoning Valley weather history, with more than half of the rain falling on three days.
“All it takes is a few thunderstorms — sometimes only one — and it throws off the average,” said John Mayers, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Cleveland. “The thunderstorms in the summertime can be very strong.”
Overall, 6.26 inches of rain fell in the Valley last month, according to weather statistics from the National Weather Service taken at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in Vienna. The NWS has weather data from this area dating back to 1897.
The rainfall last month was more than an inch only one time — 1.71 inches on Aug. 20. It came close twice with 0.95 of an inch of rain recorded on Aug. 2 and 0.93 of an inch on Aug. 11.
Without those three days, only 2.67 inches of rain fell last month. The average for August rainfall in the Valley is 3.02 inches.
In August 2013, 2.63 inches of rain fell in the area. In August 2012, 4.48 inches of rain fell. Neither of the previous Augusts had a single day with at least an inch of rain.
