Houston Astros fire manager Bo Porter
HOUSTON
The Houston Astros have fired manager Bo Porter in his second season with the club.
General manager Jeff Luhnow says the decision wasn’t based on Houston’s record but because “we need a new direction in our clubhouse.”
The Astros entered Monday in fourth place in the AL West with a 59-79 record, second worst in the league.
Bench coach Dave Trembley was also let go and Tom Lawless takes over as interim manager. Lawless worked in Houston’s minor league system and was the interim manager at Triple-A Oklahoma City this season when manager Tony DeFrancesco was on medical leave.
Adam Everett will replace Trembley.
Old cards of Ty Cobb, Cy Young for sale
BIDDEFORD, Maine
A small auction house that’s becoming known for selling rare baseball memorabilia has come across a mother lode of cards prized by collectors. The collection from 1909, 1910 and 1911 features more than 1,400 cards including famous players like Cy Young and Ty Cobb.
Troy Thibodeau from Saco River Auction Co. in Biddeford, Maine, says the collection is comprised of tobacco cards that were included in cigarette packs. He says the collector was a heavy smoker and baseball fan from New York.
The cards will be auctioned as individual cards and in small lots starting in January. Scott Hileman from New Jersey-based SportsCard Guaranty graded the cards. He describes the collection as “incredible.”
Louisville beats Miami 31-13 in ACC debut
LOUISVILLE, Ky.
Dominique Brown’s 15-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Gerald Christian’s 10-yard TD catch late in the fourth followed Louisville’s big defensive performance that helped beat Miami 31-13 Monday night.
The victory provided a successful Atlantic Coast Conference debut for the Cardinals and to Bobby Petrino’s second coaching stint at the school.
Despite the 18-point margin, Louisville showed none of the offensive prowess expected in Petrino’s return as the Cardinals outgained the Hurricanes 336-244 in a ragged game offensively for both teams. Louisville’s new 3-4 defense provided many of the opportunities by forcing three takeaways. A late Louisville touchdown sealed the game.
