YSU volleyball perfect on opening weekend

NASHVILLE, TENN.

Behind tournament Most Valuable Player Val Jeffery (Soph., Pickerington North), the Youngstown State volleyball team hit .416 to complete a perfect weekend at the Belmont Invitational. After sweeping Evansville on Friday, the Penguins swept Belmont Saturday morning and followed with a 3-0 win over Kennesaw State. The scores were 25-18, 25-23, 25-13.

Jeffery finished with 37 assists and averaged 11.11 assists at the tournament. She was joined on the all-tournament team by Lexi Egler (Sr., Clarkston, Mich.) and Aly Ryan (Jr., Novi, Mich.).

YSU punter honored despite popular gaffe

Youngstown State’s Joey Cejudo, despite his now infamous butt punt, was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.

The senior from Chino Hills, Calif., made field goals of 29, 33 and 36 yards and averaged 38.3 yards on seven punts in the Penguins’ 28-17 loss at Illinois.

Cejudo earned a bit a fame on social networks when a punt of his hit the back of a YSU blocker on a punt attempt. The hashtag #buttpunt was trending and ESPN showed the play that overshadowed an outstanding performance.

He had a long punt of 47 yards and placed two inside the opponents 20. He also had two touchbacks on four kickoffs and had an assisted tackle on kickoff return.

Blaney’s pass in final turn wins truck race

BOWMANVILLE, Ontario

Ryan Blaney edged German Quiroga by 0.049 seconds to win the Truck Series race on the road course at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. The win Sunday was Blaney’s first of the season, third of his career. Blaney and Quiroga drag-raced off the last corner to the finish line after Blaney made a pass in the final turn.
