Woman charged

YOUNGSTOWN

Police charged Jacqueline Nelson, 22, of Akron, after her car collided with a city police cruiser just after noon Wednesday at the intersection of East Midlothian Boulevard and Market Street.

A spokesman for the department’s Accident Investigation Unit said the officer was driving east on East Midlothian Boulevard when his cruiser was struck in the side by a car traveling north on Market Street driven by Nelson. The spokesman said Nelson ran a red light.

The officer was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center to be examined. Nelson was taken to the Mahoning County jail for a charge of driving under suspension because she has several open suspensions on her license, reports said.

Burglary reported

A Jean Street resident reported a burglary at an apartment complex at 11:15 p.m. Thursday. The resident advised police the incident likely occurred while she was gone Wednesday. The resident reported she returned home to her apartment to find her back window up and a TV missing.

Charged with DUI

LIBERTY

Police charged a man with driving under the influence and reckless operation after seeing him driving 78 mph on Belmont Avenue, a report says.

The officer pulled over Elmer Thomas Gordon, 33, of Iowa Avenue in Girard, at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. The report said Gordon turned off Belmont onto Gypsy Lane and several other streets without signaling, including Dearborn Avenue, where the officer caught up with him when he stopped and hit a curb.

He told the officer he was returning home from buying cigarettes. The officer could smell alcohol, Gordon’s eyes were glassy, and his speech was thick and delayed, the report said.

Gordon refused to take a breath test, and received an automatic suspension. He is to appear in Girard Municipal Court at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Harvest event planned

Mill Creek MetroParks, along with the Mahoning County Jr. Fair Poultry Club, will host a Farm Harvest Fun event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the MetroParks Farm, 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road.

The event is an opportunity to learn about different types of poultry, enjoy harvest activities, see special harvest characters and hear harvest-time stories. Face painting and fall turkey crafts will be available for a small fee. The event is free.

Fall open house

Forever Safe Farms Animal Educational Center, 3155 McCracken Road, will host a fall open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Participants are to bring in items such as canned fruits or vegetables, bleach, wheat bread, gently used blankets or towels and take your tour for free. Additional items will get you chances to win door prizes.
