Poland to start new sport
Poland Lacrosse would like to announce the start of it’s inaugural season and no experience is necessary. Lacrosse is a spring sport for both girls and boys. The season runs from Feb. 23 - June 6. The high school age team will be competing in the Ohio High Boys School Lacrosse Association (OHSLA) club division and the Ohio School Girls Lacrosse Association (OSLA) club division. Poland will compete against local teams such as Boardman High Schoo, and Canfield High School, as well as other Akron and Canton area high school teams. There will be US Lacrosse certified coaches to teach the fundamentals of the game. Equipment will be provided. All boys and girls interested in playing lacrosse at the high school level should attend the sign up meeting on Nov. 8 from 9 a.m. until noon at the Poland library in the lower level atrium. All information regarding equipment, age groups, costs, clinics and practice schedules will be available at sign ups. They also invite all grade school aged boys and girls to sign up. They will conduct clinics and practices as well as schedule games at the middle school and grade school level. Lions Club sponsors poster contest
The Poland Lions Club is sponsoring a poster contest that is conducted worldwide to promote World Peace through the eyes of the children of the world. This years theme is “Peace, Love and Understanding” and students 11-, 12- and 13-years of age at the date of Nov. 15, 2014 are encouraged to participate. All the details of the contest are in the packet that your child has obtained through the Poland Schools. In the past, several students at Poland have received state recognition and the Poland Lions hope again that a student from Poland could receive this recognition. Locally the Lions Club of Poland will recognize the local 1st place winner at their meeting and will present the winner a prize, as well. The winning poster from Poland will then be submitted to our district for judging at the district level. Each contest participant will be recognized for their efforts as well by the local club. All Posters are due to the school for pick up on Nov. 5.
Saxon Club to host craft show
The Youngstown Saxon Club, located at 710 S. Meridian Road in Youngstown, is sponsoring a Fall Craft Show on Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The Ladies of Branch 22 are the sponsors. The Baird Mitchell story
Many people know that the former Poland Seminary High School stadium on Cortland Street was named Baird Mitchell Field, but do not really know much about this local star athlete and war hero. The Friends of the Poland Library will feature a presentation on Mitchell on Nov. 4 at 9:30 a.m. at the Poland library. Local historians Ted Heineman and Dave Smith have uncovered many interesting facts and photos never before seen in Poland and will share their findings. The public is invited to attend. The program will be repeated on Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Little Red Schoolhouse, home of the Poland Historical Society. The schoolhouse is located at the intersection of State Route 224 and Struthers Road.
Psychologist to discuss emotional aspects of living with Ostomies
Charles A. Thorne, PhD, will discuss the emotional and psychological aspects of living with an ostomy during the next meeting of the Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group. Thorne is a clinical psychologist with an extensive background in family health having served as associate director of the family medicine residency program at St. Elizabeth Health Center, director of the behavioral science division of the Family Health Center at St. E’s and psychologist for the pain clinic and acute rehabilitation departments at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren. The Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group will meet from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Nov. 11 at Humility House, located at 755 Ohltown Road in Austintown.
Baby/Kids Resale to be Nov. 8
There will be a Baby/Kids Resale at Beyond Expectations SouthBridge Therapy and Learning Center, located at 725 Boardman-Canfield Road, E-1 in Boardman, on Nov. 8 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Items for sale include gently used clothes, toys, books and other children’s items. Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League to meet
The next meeting of the Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will take place on Nov. 3 at Glenellen Assisted Living, located at 9661 Market St. in Boardman, at 7 p.m. Members are to bring an item for a tea basket that will be given at a special drawing at The “Downton Abbey“ tea on Nov. 15 at the Poland library. Favors for the tea will be made that evening. Hostesses for the meeting are Tina Bellino, Linda Fabian and Nina Lowery. The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women age 18 and up, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. HMHP offers free ‘Health at Home’ workshop
Humility of Mary Health Partners will offer a one-hour workshop titled Health at Home on Nov. 13 at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center, located at 8401 Market Street in Boardman. The workshop includes an easy-to-use reference guide that provides information about more than 200 common health problems as well as tips on caring for yourself and your family, preventing illness and injury, and advice on when to seek medical attention. The morning session runs from 11 a.m. until noon in the Willow Room and the evening session runs from 5:30-6:30 p.m. The workshop and all materials are free, but reservations are required. Reservations can be made by calling 330-480-3070. Health at Home workshops will be offered at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown on Dec. 11.
View from above
Last year the MetroParks constructed an elevated observation platform to allow visitors to freely view the without disturbing the birds and other wildlife there. The deck elevation combined with the natural topography of the site puts observers approximately 50 feet above the ponds. Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist Nancy will be stationed there on Nov. 1 from 10 a.m. until noon. Stop by to look for birds and chat.
Farm harvest fun
Celebrate the harvest with Mahoning County Jr. Fair Poultry Club. Families will learn about different types of poultry, enjoy harvest activities, see special harvest characters and hear harvest time stories on Nov. 1 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the MetroParks Farm. Face painting and fall turkey craft will be available for a small fee. This is a free Event.
Book discussion
The Washington Post Book World called The Gift of the Good Land: Further Essays Cultural and Agricultural by Wendell Berry a “reference book of the body and soul…” Read his arguments for family-based local economies, focused on sustainable practices that take into account how land, people, nature, animals and family are interwoven, then join the discussion at Ford Nature Center on Nov. 1 from 10:30 a.m. until noon.
Bundle up trolley tours
Hitch a ride aboard the Cohasset Express on Nov. 1 from 10:30 a.m. until noon and 1-2:30 p.m., and Nov. 9 from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and 1:30-3 p.m. for a chilly version of the tour of Mill Creek MetroParks. The trolley is unheated, so plan to bundle up The 1 1/2 hour tour will give you the chance to explore, experience and enjoy the beauty, natural elements and historic features and buildings of Ohio’s first park district. BYOK: November on Newport
Bring your own boat for the last kayak trip of the season on Nov. 1 from 2-4 p.m. at the East Newport Boat Launch. Participants must be at least 18 and sign a waiver. This event is weather dependent and is offered in partnership with Trumbull Canoe Trails. Register at Ford Nature Center by Oct. 31.
Farm Harvest Feast
During the Farm Harvest Fun event on Nov. 1 from 11 a.m. tunil 2 p.m., families may join the MetroPark Farm for a special harvest lunch, featuring turkey and chicken wraps. Special Harvest Feast guest characters will be available at 11 a.m. for posed pictures which will be emailed to families. The cost is $5 per child and $7.50 for adults. Reservations with payment are required and can be made by calling 330-533-7572.
Lantern tours of Lanterman’s Mill
See the Old Mill in a different light during these guided lantern tours on Nov. 1 every 15 minutes from 6-6:45 p.m. at Lanterman’s Mill. Register/pay at Ford Nature Center by Oct. 30. The cost is adults $3 R, $4 NR; and 12 and under or 60 and over $2 R, $3 NR.

Turn off your phones, cameras, and other devices. Spend time in a park area on Nov. 2 from 2-4 p.m. with no facilities and only a single trail. Meet at Deerpath Drive off Hitchcock Road. Call Ford Nature Center for details. The is a moderate hike of 2 miles.
Yoga in the Gardens
Join Marina Perdos in the mornings and Karres Cvetkovich in the evenings for a blend of energizing yoga styles that will help you keep a healthy outlook Nov. 4, 6, 11, 13, 18, 20 and 25 at 9:30-11 a.m. and 5:30-7 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Stoneware Sushi set
Lynn Cardwell will help students construct a nature-inspired stoneware sushi set on Nov. 4 from 5:30-8 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens. It will be food and dishwasher safe. The clay project will be glazed, fired and ready for pick up in approximately five weeks. The cost is $39; FFRG member $30.
Volunteer-led recreational hikes
There will be a volunteer-led recreational hikes on Nov. 5 at 9 a.m. Meet at overflow parking lot on West Golf Drive. This hike will have an easy rating of 1 or 3 miles.
T’ai Chi Step One in the gardens
Ease stress, improve health and increase vitality with T’ai Chi Step One on every Wednesday in November from 12-1 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Join Marie Lew in warm-ups, breathing exercises and selected movements from a classic Chen T’ai Chi form. This is a drop-in class and the cost is $10 per class.
Bulbs for the holidays

At this event for children ages 2-3 on Nov 6 from 10-11 a.m. and Nov. 8 from 12-1 p.m. at Ford Nature Center, learn about these ring-tailed bandits known as raccons, who are the size of a large cat and wear a black mask. A Loose Knit Group
Enjoy the lovely view from the Antonucci Library as you help to create blankets for organizations that give to those in need Nov. 7 and 21 from 10 a.m. until noon at Fellows Riverside Gardens. All helping hands are welcome, both experienced and anyone wanting to learn to knit or crochet. Donations of yarn and needles are appreciated at any time.

YWCA invites artists to participate in art sale
The YWCA of Youngstown is inviting artists to participate in an Early Bird Art Sale before Black Friday. The sale will be from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Nov. 22 and 23 at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The YWCA is providing an opportunity for all artists – men and women – to sell their artwork at a pre-holidays art sale. The cost is $10 per table. The YWCA will retain a 20 percent commission on all art sales. All artwork must be priced $100 or less. Artwork does not need to be framed. Proceeds will be used to purchase lighting for the Women Artists Annual Art Exhibition. Artists under 18 will need a parent or guardian to reserve the table. Ladies Night Out to be Nov. 13

Civil War ball to be Nov. 1
A gala “Living History” Ball honoring Youngstown’s Civil War Governor, David Tod, will take place in the ballroom of the Tyler History Center in downtown Youngstown on Nov. 1 from 6-7 p.m. Proceeds to benefit the educational programs of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society. David Tod, the great-great-great grandson of Governor Tod will receive guests, as will President Lincoln, Mary Todd Lincoln and Dan Rice, a colorful entertainer of the 1800’s. There will be easy to learn period dancing, historical skits, prizes, light refreshments and more. Period dress is encouraged, but not required. Shepherd of the Valley - Poland hosts Senior Health Fair
Shepherd of the Valley - Poland will be hosting a free health fair on Nov. 4 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 301 W. Western Reserve Road in Poland. Local church sponsors clothing drop off
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Poland is now sponsoring a clothing drop off shed as a service to the community, installed in September. The clothing will be distributed all over the United States and world to those who can use it. This program keeps clothing out of the landfill, helps out those in need and Prince of Peace donates the small revenue generated to local causes. St. Pauly Textiles is a family owned upstate New York based company and is a member of the Better Business Bureau. St. Pauly collects usable clothing, shoes, sneakers, belts, purses, linens, blankets and drapes. In 2012, more than 59 million garments were distributed to an estimated 7.5 million people all over the world through the St. Pauly program. To drop off donations, you can find the donation shed in the parking lot at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, located at 2985 Center Road in Poland. HMHP presents “Coping With Stress”
Humility of Mary Health Partners will present “Coping With Stress: What to Do When Life Isn’t Perfect” with Rachel O’Neill, Ph. D., for the autumn Women in Touch program. O’Neill, who has more than 14 years’ experience in the mental health profession, will discuss strategies to effectively manage stress and improve one’s health. Continuing education credits are available for nurses, dieticians, dietary technicians and social workers. The program is offered twice: from 5-7 p.m. Oct. 28 at Ciminero’s Banquet Center in Niles, and from 5-7 p.m. Oct. 29 at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman. Tickets cost $18 and include dinner. Friends of Fido and Legacy Dog Rescue announce Night at the Races
Friends of Fido and Legacy Dog Rescue will hosting a Night at the Races on Nov. 15 at the St. Maron Church Antioch Hall, located at 1555 S. Meridian in Youngstown. The doors will open at 6 p.m., with the first race running at 7 p.m. The admission price is $5. If you pre-buy your ticket, you will receive five free Chinese Auction tickets. Poland Historical Society bus trip to be Nov. 1
Seats are still available for the Poland Historical Society bus trip to visit the President McKinley, First Ladies’ and MAPS Air museums in Canton on Nov. 1 as a fundraiser for the Society. The cost is $65 per person and includes admissions to the three museums and Ida Saxton McKinley house and is non-refundable unless seat can be sold. Battle of the Books: the ultimate vote
Your nominations are in. Stop by the Poland library during regular hours in October to see which books got the most nominations and vote for your favorite. All completed entries will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a gift card. Winning book will be revealed in November. One vote per person. This is for teens in grades 7-12.
Preschool now accepting new students
The Potential Development Preschool is now accepting applications for new students. The Preschool is an early childhood special education center that focuses on working with children ages 2 1/2 - 6 years-old who have behavioral problems, developmental delays and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder. Students enrolled at Potential Development benefit from low teacher to student ratios, an extended school year that runs through the end of July, on site speech and occupational therapy services, more than 60 years of experience in working with children with special needs and weekly Gymsters classes. The preschool program is licensed by the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services and participates in the Step Up to Quality program (SUTQ), a voluntary quality rating system for early care and education programs. The school is 1 of 6 preschools in Mahoning County to receive a Four-Star Rating from SUTQ out of a possible Five Stars.
