With 38 new kindergarten students beginning the school year at North Elementary, that means 38 sets of parents who may not be aware of the school and what activities and events the Parent Teacher Organization does at the school.

On Sept. 23, North Elementary and the PTO teamed up for a Kindergarten Tea event, in which the parents could watch their children perform as well as be informed on the PTO’s activities.

“It’s just an opportunity to welcome new kindergarten parents,” PTO member and Kindergarten Tea chairperson Tami Volpini said. “The kids put on a little program for them, then they have cookies and tea with their parents and grandparents and family members after.”

Volpini said the event has been done for at least the past 10 years.

The Kindergarten Tea started off with the introduction of PTO members and the various activities and events it does during the year. Parents were given the opportunity to sign up for any event they so chose, such as volunteering for lunch room duty.

Then the children took center stage, greeting the attendees in song and singing a variation of the Alphabet Song.

Afterwards, the students and parents were treated to various kinds of cookies, cupcakes and brownies, with lemonade and juice to drink.

Volpini was asked how the parents would benefit by attending.

“Getting familiar with things in this school and the PTO organization and what we do for this school and getting to spend time with their kindergartners and just being introduced to the activities that we do here,” she said.
