The Mahoning Valley Hospital Foundation has awarded a $10,000 grant to the The Ursuline Center’s Motherhouse Pool Ministry Renovation Project.

“We are honored that the Mahoning Valley Hospital Foundation recognizes the importance of our Motherhouse Pool Ministry’s programs to people in the Mahoning Valley,” said Sister Mary McCormick, OSU, general superior of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and president of The Ursuline Center board. “We are grateful and to its board members for their generosity and support.”

Senchak made a presentation to the Center’s board during its October meeting. He observed that he’s known the Ursuline Sisters since his primary and high school days and is “impressed that the Sisters continue to be important leaders in the community, especially with their commitment to health and education.”

The Mahoning Valley Hospital Foundation grant supports a recently completed renovation project that replaced the pool’s roof and skylights and upgraded its HVAC and electrical needs. The Motherhouse Pool is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown.

“Each week, our Motherhouse Pool ministry is utilized by approximately 800 people from diverse populations across the Mahoning Valley,” Sister Nancy Dawson, OSU, executive director of The Ursuline Center, said. “The grant by the Mahoning Valley Hospital Foundation helps ensure that these and future guests can continue to participate in the important health and safety programs offered here.”

The Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown offer and collaborate with other groups and individuals in offering several pool programs, including swimming lessons for all ages, especially children; low-impact water fitness classes for senior citizens enrolled in the SilverSneakers Fitness Program; water aerobics for adults of all ages; arthritis program classes offered in conjunction with AustinWoods for adults with joint/mobility issues and area residents find relief from physical ailments through aquatic physical therapy offered here by the Cleveland Clinic.

The pool is utilized by children and young adults involved in other Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown ministries. Many would not otherwise have access to such a facility.
