Saxon Club to host craft show

The Youngstown Saxon Club, located at 710 S. Meridian Road in Youngstown, is sponsoring a Fall Craft Show on Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The Ladies of Branch 22 are the sponsors. Fall rummage sale to be Nov. 7 and 8

Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, located at 4470 Norquest Boulevard in Austintown, will be sponsoring a fall rummage sale on Nov. 7 and 8 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. There will be a variety of interesting items. Also, there will be a bake sale and 50/50 raffle. All proceeds benefit maintenance of the church.

Chili cook off and concert Nov. 9

The Austintown Board of Education and the Fitch Band invite you to the Veterans Day Concert and Chili Cook off on Nov. 9 at Austintown Fitch High School. The Chili Cook Off will take place in the cafeteria from 2-4 p.m. and local veterans will serve as judges. The cost of $10 for adults and $5 for children, seniors and veterans will include chili tastes, cornbread, dessert, a drink and a ticket to the band concert, which will take place at 5 p.m. in the gymnasium. The cost for the concert alone is $5 for adults and $3 for children. To enter your chili, call Brad Gessner at 330-398-0681. Spaces are limited and there is a $20 entrance fee.

Psychologist to discuss emotional aspects of living with Ostomies

Charles A. Thorne, PhD, will discuss the emotional and psychological aspects of living with an ostomy during the next meeting of the Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group. Thorne is a clinical psychologist with an extensive background in family health having served as associate director of the family medicine residency program at St. Elizabeth Health Center, director of the behavioral science division of the Family Health Center at St. E’s and psychologist for the pain clinic and acute rehabilitation departments at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren. The Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group will meet from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Nov. 11 at Humility House, located at 755 Ohltown Road in Austintown.

Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League to meet

The next meeting of the Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will take place on Nov. 3 at Glenellen Assisted Living, located at 9661 Market St. in Boardman, at 7 p.m. Members are to bring an item for a tea basket that will be given at a special drawing at The “Downton Abbey“ tea on Nov. 15 at the Poland library. Favors for the tea will be made that evening. Hostesses for the meeting are Tina Bellino, Linda Fabian and Nina Lowery. The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women age 18 and up, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. Baby/Kids Resale to be Nov. 8

There will be a Baby/Kids Resale at Beyond Expectations SouthBridge Therapy and Learning Center, located at 725 Boardman-Canfield Road, E-1 in Boardman, on Nov. 8 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Items for sale include gently used clothes, toys, books and other children’s items. Last year the MetroParks constructed an elevated observation platform to allow visitors to freely view the without disturbing the birds and other wildlife there. The deck elevation combined with the natural topography of the site puts observers approximately 50 feet above the ponds. Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist Nancy will be stationed there on Nov. 1 from 10 a.m. until noon. Stop by to look for birds and chat.

HMHP offers free ‘Health at Home’ workshop

Humility of Mary Health Partners will offer a one-hour workshop titled Health at Home on Nov. 13 at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center, located at 8401 Market Street in Boardman. The workshop includes an easy-to-use reference guide that provides information about more than 200 common health problems as well as tips on caring for yourself and your family, preventing illness and injury, and advice on when to seek medical attention. The morning session runs from 11 a.m. until noon in the Willow Room and the evening session runs from 5:30-6:30 p.m. The workshop and all materials are free, but reservations are required. Reservations can be made by calling 330-480-3070. Health at Home workshops will be offered at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown on Dec. 11.

The Washington Post Book World called The Gift of the Good Land: Further Essays Cultural and Agricultural by Wendell Berry a “reference book of the body and soul…” Read his arguments for family-based local economies, focused on sustainable practices that take into account how land, people, nature, animals and family are interwoven, then join the discussion at Ford Nature Center on Nov. 1 from 10:30 a.m. until noon.

Bundle up trolley tours

Hitch a ride aboard the Cohasset Express on Nov. 1 from 10:30 a.m. until noon and 1-2:30 p.m., and Nov. 9 from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and 1:30-3 p.m. for a chilly version of the tour of Mill Creek MetroParks. The trolley is unheated, so plan to bundle up The 1 1/2 hour tour will give you the chance to explore, experience and enjoy the beauty, natural elements and historic features and buildings of Ohio’s first park district. Farm harvest fun

Celebrate the harvest with Mahoning County Jr. Fair Poultry Club. Families will learn about different types of poultry, enjoy harvest activities, see special harvest characters and hear harvest time stories on Nov. 1 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the MetroParks Farm. Face painting and fall turkey craft will be available for a small fee. This is a free Event.

Farm Harvest Feast

During the Farm Harvest Fun event on Nov. 1 from 11 a.m. tunil 2 p.m., families may join the MetroPark Farm for a special harvest lunch, featuring turkey and chicken wraps. Special Harvest Feast guest characters will be available at 11 a.m. for posed pictures which will be emailed to families. The cost is $5 per child and $7.50 for adults. BYOK: November on Newport

Bring your own boat for the last kayak trip of the season on Nov. 1 from 2-4 p.m. at the East Newport Boat Launch. Participants must be at least 18 and sign a waiver. This event is weather dependent and is offered in partnership with Trumbull Canoe Trails. Register at Ford Nature Center by Oct. 31.

Lantern tours of Lanterman’s Mill

See the Old Mill in a different light during these guided lantern tours on Nov. 1 every 15 minutes from 6-6:45 p.m. at Lanterman’s Mill. Register/pay at Ford Nature Center by Oct. 30. The cost is adults $3 R, $4 NR; and 12 and under or 60 and over $2 R, $3 NR.

Yoga in the Gardens

Join Marina Perdos in the mornings and Karres Cvetkovich in the evenings for a blend of energizing yoga styles that will help you keep a healthy outlook Nov. 4, 6, 11, 13, 18, 20 and 25 at 9:30-11 a.m. and 5:30-7 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Stoneware Sushi set

Lynn Cardwell will help students construct a nature-inspired stoneware sushi set on Nov. 4 from 5:30-8 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens. It will be food and dishwasher safe. The clay project will be glazed, fired and ready for pick up in approximately five weeks. The cost is $39; FFRG member $30.

Volunteer-led recreational hikes

There will be a volunteer-led recreational hikes on Nov. 5 at 9 a.m. Meet at overflow parking lot on West Golf Drive. This hike will have an easy rating of 1 or 3 miles.

T’ai Chi Step One in the gardens

Ease stress, improve health and increase vitality with T’ai Chi Step One on every Wednesday in November from 12-1 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens. At this event for children ages 2-3 on Nov 6 from 10-11 a.m. and Nov. 8 from 12-1 p.m. at Ford Nature Center, learn about these ring-tailed bandits known as raccons, who are the size of a large cat and wear a black mask. A Loose Knit Group

Enjoy the lovely view from the Antonucci Library as you help to create blankets for organizations that give to those in need Nov. 7 and 21 from 10 a.m. until noon at Fellows Riverside Gardens. YWCA invites artists to participate in art sale

The YWCA of Youngstown is inviting artists to participate in an Early Bird Art Sale before Black Friday. The sale will be from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Nov. 22 and 23 at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The YWCA is providing an opportunity for all artists – men and women – to sell their artwork at a pre-holidays art sale. The cost is $10 per table. The YWCA will retain a 20 percent commission on all art sales. All artwork must be priced $100 or less. Artwork does not need to be framed. Proceeds will be used to purchase lighting for the Women Artists Annual Art Exhibition. Artists under 18 will need a parent or guardian to reserve the table. Civil War ball to be Nov. 1

A gala “Living History” Ball honoring Youngstown’s Civil War Governor, David Tod, will take place in the ballroom of the Tyler History Center in downtown Youngstown on Nov. 1 from 6-7 p.m. Proceeds to benefit the educational programs of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society. David Tod, the great-great-great grandson of Governor Tod will receive guests, as will President Lincoln, Mary Todd Lincoln and Dan Rice, a colorful entertainer of the 1800’s. There will be easy to learn period dancing, historical skits, prizes, light refreshments and more. Period dress is encouraged, but not required. AMS PTA to host annual craft show

On Nov. 8, the Austintown Middle School PTA will host it’s 31st annual Craft Show from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at Austintown Middle School, located at 800 Racoon Road. This event will feature more than 200 vendors selling homemade crafts, food, art, clothing, jewelry, cosmetics and more. There will also be a Chinese Auction and a 50/50 raffle. Women’s group to host sale

The women’s group of Grace Lutheran Church, located at 162 South Raccoon Road in Austintown, with host its annual Trash and Treasure sale on Nov. 1 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. There will be household goods, clothing, holiday decorations, toys, books and miscellaneous items. Baked goods will also be available for sale. At 12:30 p.m., all clothing will be $1 per bag and all merchandise will be half off. Proceeds from the sale will be given to area charities. A lunch of homemade vegetable beef soup or a prok and sauerkraut sandwich, followed by a piece of pie, will also be available. Also offered are hot dogs, sloppy Joes, soda pop and coffee.

Friends of Fido and Legacy Dog Rescue announce Night at the Races

Friends of Fido and Legacy Dog Rescue will hosting a Night at the Races on Nov. 15 at the St. Maron Church Antioch Hall, located at 1555 S. Meridian in Youngstown. The doors will open at 6 p.m., with the first race running at 7 p.m. The admission price is $5. If you pre-buy your ticket, you will receive five free Chinese Auction tickets. Preschool now accepting new students

The Potential Development Preschool is now accepting applications for new students. The Preschool is an early childhood special education center that focuses on working with children ages 2 1/2 - 6 years-old who have behavioral problems, developmental delays and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder.
