1964: Ruth Yozwiak, S. Schenley Avenue, will be honored as “Engineers’ Sweetheart” at Youngstown University’s 6th annual Engineers’ Ball at the Voyager Inn.

1939: In her syndicated newspaper column, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt describes her visit to Youngstown, which she describes as a city that “seems to exist primarily for the production of steel.”

Jack Green, 20, of 204 E. Rayen Ave., an East High graduate and star football player on the Youngstown College team, dies of streptococcic throat in South Side hospital. The YC game with Davis- Elkins College is cancelled.

Addressing a rally at Our Lady of Hungary Church, Municipal Judge Peter Mulholland proudly says he has “suspended more fines and costs than any combination of individuals who ever served in municipal court.” He says he doesn’t believe in penalizing wives and families “at times like these, when they need money at home for food and clothing.”
