Police: No crime in Canseco gunshot injury

LAS VEGAS

Police in Las Vegas say no crime was committed when former major league slugger Jose Canseco shot himself in the finger in what he and investigators say was an accident.

The former Oakland Athletics outfielder tweeted a photo Wednesday of his heavily bandaged left hand and said he was recovering at home.

Canseco’s fiancee, Leila Knight, was also active on social media urging friends to pray for his finger.

Police say Knight was in the house Tuesday afternoon when the gun discharged as Canseco was cleaning in it the kitchen.

Canseco is a right-handed batter who hit 462 career home runs and was a six-time All-Star. He also played for Texas, Boston, Toronto, Tampa Bay, the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox.

NHL suspends Moore 5 games for head hit

NEW YORK

The NHL has suspended New York Rangers defenseman John Moore for five games without pay for an illegal hit to the head of Minnesota Wild forward Erik Haula.

The decision was handed out Wednesday by the league’s Department of Player Safety following an in-person hearing with Moore, who is considered a repeat offender.

Moore was assessed a match penalty 7:12 into the second period of Monday night’s game when he delivered a shoulder to Haula’s head in the New York zone after Haula shot the puck.

Moore was suspended for two games in last season’s Eastern Conference finals when he landed a similar hit to the head of Montreal forward Dale Weise in Game 5.

Under terms of the collective bargaining agreement, Moore will lose $51,859.75 in salary that will go to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Howe’s family says his condition is guarded

LUBBOCK, Texas

Gordie Howe’s family says the hockey Hall of Famer’s condition remains “guarded” but his spirits are good after a significant stoke Sunday.

The family released a statement through the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday. The stroke occurred over the weekend at his daughter’s home in Lubbock, Texas. The family says the 86-year-old Howe is showing some signs of improvement, but there is a long road to recovery ahead.

Howe’s family reports that his competitive spirit remains strong.

The man known as “Mr. Hockey” set NHL marks with 801 goals and 1,850 points — mostly with the Red Wings — that held up until Wayne Gretzky surpassed him in the record book.
