COLUMBUS
Several Mahoning Valley schools have been recognized by the Ohio Department of Education for maintaining high academic achievement among students, including many from economically disadvantaged circumstances.
The Ohio Department of Education named 98 Schools of Promise, 48 High Performing Schools of Honor and 27 High Progress Schools of Honor from around the state.
To qualify as a School of Promise, a building must meet several academic criteria and serve at least 40 percent economically disadvantaged students and at least 80 percent of students must have rated proficient in math and reading among other criteria.
In Mahoning County, the schools that achieved that honor are Robinwood Lane and West Boulevard elementary schools in Boardman and Jackson-Milton, Lowellville, Struthers and Youngstown Early College high schools.
In Trumbull County, Bloomfield High School, Girard Intermediate and Senior High and Prospect Elementary, Hubbard Elementary and High, LaBrae High and Middle, Maplewood Elementary and Middle and Mineral Ridge High schools all made the list.
In Columbiana County, Calcutta and Rogers Elementary schools in Beaver Local, South Side Middle in Columbiana Village, Reilly Elementary in Salem and Daw and Garfield elementary schools in Wellsville are Schools of Promise.
To be a High Performing School of Honor, a school must meet several academic criteria, be Title 1 eligible and serve at least 40 percent economically disadvantaged students. Title 1 is a federal program to benefit economically disadvantaged children.
High Progress Schools of Honor are buildings that have made the greatest five-year gains, although they still may have work to do to achieve at the level of High Performing Schools of Honor.
In Mahoning, Robinwood, West Boulevard, Jackson-Milton and YEC are all High Performing schools. In Trumbull, Bloomfield, all three Girard schools, Hubbard High, both Maplewood schools and Mineral Ridge are all High Performing schools while in Columbiana, Rogers and South Side also are High Performing schools and Daw Elementary is a High Progress school.
