‘Pilot for a Day’
Vienna
Jacob Sypert, 11, of Niles will be sworn in as an honorary Air Force Reserve 2nd lieutenant and “Pilot for a Day” at the 910th Airlift Wing at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station today. Jacob, the 60th inductee in the program that began in June 2000, will visit the base for a schedule of events. He is receiving treatment for leukemia at Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley.
“Pilot for a Day” aims to provide a fun day of activities to children who live with a chronic or life-threatening disease or illness. The Youngstown Air Reserve Station Base Community Council is the financial co-sponsor of the program. Children receive a genuine air-crew flight suit and other mementos, as well as a tour of the base that includes a ride on a base firetruck and being taxied aboard a $33 million C-130 Hercules aircraft down the main runway.
Tentative ID
WARREN
The woman whose body was found in a burning house at 448 Ivanhoe Street NE on Friday night and whose death has been ruled a homicide by shooting is “presumptively” identified as Sophie Stefek, 41, of Warren.
But Dr. Humphrey Germaniuk, Trumbull County coroner, said DNA will be used to positively identify her. Stefek did not have X-rays, medical records, dental records or fingerprints to use to provide identification, Dr. Germaniuk said. He said he doesn’t know how long it will take the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to provide a firm identification.
The man who died in the house with her is Charles McNear, the home’s owner. He had records on file to help identify him.
One-car accident
GIRARD
A woman was killed in a one-car accident early Tuesday afternoon, police reported. Police did not release her name late Tuesday, but said her identity would be revealed in a news release today. Police don’t know what caused the accident.
Police said the accident happened at 12:47 p.m. at 1015 N. State St. when the woman crashed into a building there. The building is an empty garage.
Man sentenced
CLEVELAND
A federal judge has sentenced a man who owned a Canfield business to three years’ probation, including six months of home confinement, for failing to account for and pay over employment taxes to the IRS.
U.S. District Court Judge Dan Aaron Polster also fined David S. Owens, 62, now of Columbus, $50,000 and ordered him to pay $394,543 in restitution Friday after Owens pleaded guilty to the charge. In 2008 and 2009, Owens withheld about $570,000 in payroll taxes from employees of Advetech Inc., but failed to pay that money to the IRS, the U.S. attorney said.
Owens, who has no prior criminal record, said in a sentencing memorandum he engaged in the practice in an attempt to save his business during the recession.
