Canfield township fixes up Messerly Road fire station

CANFIELD
Township officials have fixed one problem at the fire station on Messerly Road while they continue to address heating concerns.
Marie Cartwright, township trustee and member of the Cardinal Joint Fire District Board, said the township will spend $300 to fix a remote control for the garage-door opener at Fire Station 2 on Messerly Road.
The township had talked with fire district Chief Don Hutchison about possibly replacing the remote or just replacing a part for the 22-year-old remote. Once Hutchison told them the remote for Fire Station 1, which is in the Canfield City building, 104 S. Lisbon St., is 40 years old, they decided to repair the 22-year-old remote at Station 2.
With that in mind, Cartwright said “the $300 investment is well worth it as opposed to buying a new one.”
The township leases Fire Station 2 to the fire district for $1 a year, the same deal the city has for Fire Station 1, and handles maintenance issues.
While the remote has been repaired, the township continues to work with engineers on a plan for heating issues at the station, which is manned 24 hours a day.
“It’s not at a consistent temperature and it tends to get chilly in certain areas,” Cartwright explained. “[We’ve] been talking with engineers for awhile and trying to bid and determine what really needs to be done.”
Keith Rogers, township administrator, said, “I’ve talked to HVAC contractors, and I’ve talked to engineers. It’s just there’s a heat-loss problem, and we’re trying to do some upgrades to make it more energy-efficient.”
He also said the township is working “to make the living conditions better for when the firemen are on duty.”
