The Mahoning County Data Processing Board has recommended that the county commissioners approve a $309,525 contract for the purchase, installation and maintenance of an electronic-document filing system for the county’s common pleas and area courts.

The seven-member data process board recommended the agreement with Tybera Co., of Orem, Utah, at its Monday meeting. The pact would include three years of system maintenance.

Kathi McNabb Welsh, chief deputy clerk of courts, said she hopes the proposed contract can go before the commissioners in mid-November.

She added the county hopes to make e-filing available beginning with civil cases in its common pleas court in late spring 2015.

The e-filing project is being funded by court special projects funds and court document filing fees dedicated to technology.

E-filing will allow lawyers to file court documents electronically from their office or home computers without having to file them by mail or in person at the court.

Electronic filing will save time and money and increase productivity, said county Auditor Michael V. Sciortino added.

Welsh said the county had originally budgeted $600,000 for the e-filing project, but now expects to spend closer to $500,000 on this effort.
