Mahoning Avenue between Glenwood and McKinley avenues will be closed at 8 a.m. today until further notice for emergency sewer and waterline repairs.

Eastbound traffic will be detoured to Interstate 680 South to the Glenwood-Mahoning avenues exit. Westbound traffic will be detoured to I-680 North at the Marshall Street entrance ramp to Connecticut/Belle Vista exit to Steel Street.

Film available

“Jamie Marks Is Dead,” the film based on a novel written by Youngstown State University professor Christopher Barzak, goes on sale today through all major online retailers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Walmart and Target.

The movie was adapted from Barzak’s fiction novel “One for Sorrow,” which is set in the Youngstown area. The story follows a group of teen outsiders who are caught in a world between life and death.

Carter Smith is the director of “Jamie Marks,” which is unrated but R in nature. The film was shot in 2013 in the Monticello, N.Y., area.

It was released in theaters in August.

Hotel California sued

Hotel California in Austintown is headed to court, facing trademark infringement allegations.

According to The Vindicator’s broadcast partner 21 WFMJ-TV, Ocean Avenue Properties filed a civil lawsuit In U.S. District Court here claiming that it has had the trademark on Hotel California since 1997, when it began operating a Hotel California in Santa Monica, Calif. Ocean Avenue also recently has begun to franchise and license the brand in California.

Sebastian Rucci owns the Austintown hotel and is accused of trademark infringement, trademark counterfeiting and violating Ohio’s deceptive trade regulations.

Theft reported

Township police are investigating a case in which $6,000 reportedly was stolen from a residence on the 7300 block of Eisenhower Drive.

According to a police report filed Friday, a victim told police he believes that his two roommates stole $6,000 in cash from envelopes he keeps in his bedroom.

The victim reported to police that the suspects, who also were his employees at a restaurant, had recently moved into his apartment. He said they had taken their belongings out of the apartment without informing him, which is when he noticed the cash missing.

The cash is money earned from his business, the victim said.

Facing gun charge

Logan Jones, 24, of Salem, is set to appear in court today for a gun-related charge after being arrested during a traffic stop Sunday.

According to a police report, Jones was sent to the diversion area of an operating-a-vehicle-impaired checkpoint after failing to display his driver’s license at the checkpoint.

Police searched his car after discovering Jones was driving under suspension and had fictitious plates.

Police found a gun, a bulletproof vest and a mask with a skull on it in his trunk. While police were searching his car, Jones left the checkpoint area, according to the report.

A Boardman officer persuaded Jones to turn himself in, and Jones was arrested on charges of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, obstructing official business and possession of criminal tools.

He was released on a summons pending his court date today.

Firearm charge

A Boardman man is set to appear in court today for an arraignment after being arrested for improperly handling a firearm in the parking lot of Giant Eagle, 1201 Doral Drive.

According to a police report, Demario Hoyt, 19, of Mathews Road, was arrested Saturday after a township police officer working at Giant Eagle noticed Hoyt carrying a handgun.

The officer was approached by a woman who was with Hoyt, who told the officer she was afraid of Hoyt and wanted the officer to search her car because she believed Hoyt had drugs and a gun in it.

While searching the vehicle, the officer noticed Hoyt holding a gun. Hoyt dropped the gun and attempted to flee, according to the report. The officer caught him before he got away.

Hoyt was arrested on charges of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle and tampering with evidence, both felonies. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest.

Five OVI arrests made

Members of the Mahoning County Operating a Vehicle Impaired Task Force, in collaboration with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, made five OVI arrests at a sobriety checkpoint Saturday night.

Officers conducted a checkpoint from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Market Street at Overhill Road, and did saturation patrol in the area.

Three hundred twenty-seven vehicles passed through the checkpoint. In addition to five OVI arrests, the checkpoint and patrol resulted in one arrest on a charge of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, and one each charging possession of criminal tools and obstructing official business. There also were two charges of drug possession. Two of the OVI arrests were on charges of drug-impaired driving.

Cops probe shooting

Police were investigating a shooting Monday at the Oak Ridge Apartments on East Midlothian Boulevard.

The shooting occurred at 9:05 p.m., police said.

A man was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was in critical condition.

Capt. Brad Blackburn said late Monday that no one was under arrest in the shooting, and police were talking to several witnesses and people involved. They all know one another, he said. The victim does not live at the apartment complex. Blackburn declined to say if the person who shot him does.

He said there was no more information to release at that time.
