Katie Griswold scored a hat trick as Dinamo-Maksimir beat Vikorija 8-0 to raise their record to 3-1-1 in the Croatian women’s professional soccer league system. She now has six goals in league play. Griswold played at Cardinal Mooney high school and Butler University.

Gardner wins NEOTA sportsmanship award

Garett Gardner (Poland/Valparaiso) has been selected as the Norteastern Ohio Tennis Association Boys Jr. Sportsman of the year. Gardner is a freshman at Valparaiso University and went 9-2 in singles during the fall season. Gardner went 90-9 during his high school career.

Springfield high school to offer more parking

Due to the construction project on the campus of Springfield local high school, additional parking will be available at Springfield local elementary school for the varsity football game this Friday with South Range. Complimentary shuttle service will be available to the game from 6:00-7:00 PM and then for 45 minutes after the game has concluded.

Titans blanked at home by Thomas More

The Westminster College women’s soccer team lost, 3-0, to the 11th-nationally ranked Thomas More College at Harold Burry Stadium in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) action.

Thomas More’s offense controlled the ball for the majority of the first half. Westminster (13-4-1, 6-2) registered its first shot of the game at the 35:32 mark when junior Rebecca Bradnam (Irwin, PA / Hempfield) had a shot-on-goal which was stopped by the Saints’ goalkeeper Megan Barton. Thomas More (17-1, 8-0) took an early 1-0 lead at the 29:35 mark when junior Kait Owens scored from 15-yards out off a cross from senior Sam Work. The Saints extended its lead to 2-0 at the 37:36 mark when freshman Julia Flagge-Echols scored off a header off a deflection.

Titan junior goalie Rachael Letscher (Cardinal Mooney) went to 2-2 on the season, while collecting five saves in 90 minutes of work.

Cejudo earns two national honors

Joey Cejudo was recognized as The Sports Network’s National special teams Player of the Week and also received Fred Mitchell Award accolades for the second straight month. The Sports Network recognized Cejudo’s strong performance at South Dakota State on Saturday as the top special teams performance in the FCS last week.

The Fred Mitchell Award recognizes 29 placekickers for their excellence on the football field and in the community during the month of October. He was one of 12 FCS kickers to be honored for his performance during the month.

Ex-NBA star Blaylock sentenced in fatal crash

ATLANTA

Former NBA All-Star Daron “Mookie” Blaylock has been sentenced to three years in jail after pleading guilty in car crash that killed a woman in Georgia.

His attorney Amanda Palmer tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitutution that Blaylock agreed Monday to a plea deal on a vehicular homicide charge Monday. It included seven years in prison, with four suspended. He will then be on probation for eight years.

Forty-three-year-old Monica Murphy died in the May 31, 2013, crash. Blaylock’s attorneys have said a medical condition caused the ex-player to black out and no alcohol was found in his system.

Blaylock also must perform community service and seek treatment for alcoholism.

Blaylock was a first-round draft pick by the New Jersey Nets in 1989. He played for the Atlanta Hawks and Golden State Warriors and in the 1994 NBA All-Star game.
