James Senary, assistant professor of business technologies at Eastern Gateway Community College, made a presentation at the Ohio Association of Two-Year Colleges’ annual conference last week.
Senary’s presentation was titled “Understanding Accounting Through a Practicum Approach.”
While accounting is a dynamic field of study, it’s often limited to textbook examples of debits, credits, variables, fixed and sunk costs and disconnected examples, he said.
“The practicum embedded in this class is the cornerstone of the learning environment,” Senary said. “This approach allows students to grasp the concepts outlined throughout the class from a hands-on, shared learning experience.”
The conference, titled “How We Teach,” was at Wright State University-Lake Campus in Celina, Ohio.
Senary teaches accounting and business management at the college’s Valley Center in Youngstown.
He has a bachelor of science degree from Youngstown State University and master’s in business administration from Ohio University.
