Civil War in Song event Tuesday at Tyler History Center

YOUNGSTOWN

Charles Darling will present a free lecture on “The Civil War in Song” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Tyler History Center, 325 W. Federal St., downtown.

The Civil War spawned thousands of songs by both the North and the South. Some urged troops onward, some wept over losses, some satirized opponents, others propagandized the home front, and some served as escape valves from the conflict’s tension. The songs have become cultural artifacts that reveal the emotions of the era.

Darling, an emeritus professor of history at Youngstown State University, is the author of two books on folk music. He also hosts the “Folk Festival” show on WYSU radio
