Oakland rallies to defeat YSU

OAKLAND, MICH.

Oakland rallied from two sets down and fought off two match points to defeat the Youngstown State volleyball team in five sets on Saturday. The set scores were 19-25, 25-27, 25-20, 25-14, 18-16.

The loss snaps YSU’s five-match winning streak and drops the Penguins to a game back of Oakland and Milwaukee in the Horizon League standings. Youngstown State is 15-9 overall and 6-3 in conference play while Oakland is 15-9, 7-2.

Freshman Sam Brown led the Penguins with 16 kills and 18 digs, and Aly Ryan finished with 12 kills and nine blocks. Oakland was led by Cassie Pelloni’s match-high 22 kills.

“This is a very disappointing loss for us,” YSU head coach Mark Hardaway said. “Oakland played a great match, and we had our opportunities to win set five but just couldn’t take advantage of them. Now we have to move on and get ready for UIC on Friday.”

YSU swimmers excel in Cleveland

The Youngstown State swimming and diving team earned impressive wins over Cleveland State and Valparaiso on Saturday at the Busby Natatorium. YSU won both relays, nine swimming events and one diving.

Freshman Viktoria Orosz and senior Ashley Dow won three events while Madison Aranda won twice.

In the relays, YSU opened the meet by winning the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:59.26. To end a strong performance, YSU won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:36.17.

Orosz took first in the 1,000-free with a time of 10:20.99 with a school record time. She also was first in the 100 free with a time of 53.07 seconds and t the 500 free with a time of 4:59.99.

Dow finished first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:08.76, won the 100-yard back with a time of 59.26 seconds and placed first in the 100-yard butterfly posting a time of 1:00.29.

MVCA plans social

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning Valley Coaches Association have scheduled a fall social for Wednesday at the West Fork Restaurant on Belmont Avenue.

John Barnes, the Youngstown State University women’s basketball coach, will be the speaker. Awards will be presented to spring coaches.

World Series ratings down from last fall

SAN FRANCISCO

The World Series is averaging a 7.5 rating through three games, down 7 percent from last year but up 4 percent over San Francisco’s last appearance in 2012.

Kansas City’s 3-2 win in Game 3 received a 7.2 rating, 13 share and 12.1 million viewers, according to fast national ratings from Nielsen Media Research announced by Fox on Saturday. That was down slightly from the 7.4 for St. Louis’ 5-4 win over Boston in Game 3 last year, but up from the 6.1 for the Giants’ 2-0 victory over Detroit in 2012, which matched the record low for any Series game. The third game in both 2012 and ‘13 was on a Saturday.

Friday night’s game began with 8.4 million viewers and peaked at 14.4 million during the late stages, from 11-11:25 p.m. EDT.

Fox said its prime-time rating of 7 was its best on a Friday since January 2013 and the best of any network since last February.

Breeders’ Cup rules modified

LEXINGTON, Ky.

The Breeders’ Cup has modified its Convicted Trainer Rule to prohibit the entry of any horse found to have tested positive for certain substances in the year leading up to the world championships.

The Breeders’ Cup board of directors said Saturday that it also unanimously voted to prohibit assistant trainers or other employees that banned trainers may transfer horses to from participating in the two-day event.

The modified rules will take effect beginning with next year’s Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky.
