GIRARD

A man accused of murder in the shotgun death of a friend waived his right to a preliminary hearing in Girard Municipal Court on Wednesday.

Wesley Williams, 35, of Masury is charged in the Oct. 16 death of Scott Williams, 22, of Sharpsville, Pa. His case will now go to the Trumbull County Court of Common Pleas for consideration by a grand jury.

Scott Williams was shot at 6928 Thornton Road in Hubbard Township at 10:41 p.m., according to the police report.

The house is owned by Wesley Williams’ brother, Jimmy, who said Wednesday the shooting occurred in a back room as the two men, who are not related, were looking at the gun. Jimmy Williams said Scott Williams died immediately.

Wesley Williams said he did not know the gun was loaded, and the shooting was an accident, his brother confirmed. Jimmy Williams said he had turned around and did not see the shooting, but heard it. He said he believes it was an accident because his brother and the victim were best friends.

Police said alcohol was involved.

“Just a few beers,” said Jimmy Williams.

Williams’ bond was reduced from $250,000 to $100,000, much to the relief of his family and friends who were there to support him. “Oh God, yes,” said his girlfriend, Janice Duran. “He takes care of all of us!”

Though Williams must also remain on house arrest, she was hoping he could get work privileges.

The families of the defendant and of the victim said they don’t agree Williams should be charged with murder.

“Wesley is like a son to me,” said Scott’s mother, Patty Williams.

“He’s devastated — it’s his best friend,” said Diann Williams, Wesley Williams’ mother.
