Given the declining fortunes of the candidacy of Ed FitzGerald for Ohio governor this fall, some analysts fear a trickle-down effect will drown out down- ballot Democrats in statewide races. In the important race for Ohio treasurer, that would be a critical misstep.

In that race, The Vindicator believes the Democrat challenger, Connie Pillich of suburban Cincinnati, clearly emerges as the strongest, most competent candidate.

Although incumbent Republican Treasurer Josh Mandel has handled some of the basic duties of overseeing the state treasury with competence, his long-term commitment to the job, his penchant for self-promotion and some questionable ethical practices should give thoughtful voters considerable pause.

As Pillich argues, “He has focused more on making the office work for him than on making the office work for Ohio.” She and other critics point to his expansive use of teleconference town halls that seem less about outreach and more about electioneering, his absence from Board of Deposit meetings, his propensity to stick his neck out for those who contribute big bucks to his campaign and his demonstrated willingness to abandon the office one year after he was elected to wage a high-visibility but low-impact campaign for higher political ground in his race against U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown.

STARK CONTRAST IN PILLICH

In contrast, Pillich vows to complete a full term to the position and give 100-percent focus to safeguarding our tax dollars, protecting our pensions and growing our economy. She has demonstrated skills in banking and finance, solid leadership skills culled from achieving high ranks in the U.S. Air Force and a demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with Republicans.

What’s more, she brings bright ideas. For example, her proposal to appoint an independent inspector general to keep an eye on the treasurer’s office would strengthen the accountability and public trust in it.

In short, Pillich’s experience, knowledge and bipartisanship should motivate Democrats and Republicans alike to select her as the state’s best bet for our next Ohio treasurer.
