On Sept. 15, residents at the Blackburn Home, located at 6 Botsford Street, and members of Youngstown State University’s Zeta Tau Alpha women’s fraternity teamed up to package informational goodie bags to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

During the month, several on-campus events will take place, such as Pink-Out Week and the 14th annual Pink Ribbon Cheer Classic.

Seven of the Blackburn Home’s residents, plus the staff and 12 ZTA members worked together to make the bags that will be given to women on the YSU campus. The bags contained candy, several pink ribbons to display support for the cause, and informational shower cards to educate about self-exams.

“All of the participants enjoyed the evening together, smiling as they worked, visited and enjoyed refreshments,” Blackburn Home activities director Connie Daugherty said. “The students and seniors had worked on projects together before and were happy to work toward the goal to educate the public.”

Blackburn Home resident Betty Harris, 93, said she had a great time doing the activity with the Zeta Tau Alpha members.

“I just loved being with those girls – they’re so full of life,” she said.
