Authorities say two police officers are on paid leave after an officer shot and killed a man a man who refused to drop a butcher knife while attacking his girlfriend.

The shooting occurred early Saturday in the Cleveland suburb of South Euclid. Officials say an officer shot 44-year-old Ronnie McNary of Cleveland twice after McNary refused the officers’ orders to drop the knife. McNary died at a hospital a short time later. Police officials have not identified the officer who shot McNary.

The 47-year-old girlfriend was treated for cuts and other injuries. She told police she had kicked McNary out of the house Friday night.
