Fatal crash

WEST FARMINGTON

A Hiram man died in a single-vehicle accident on state Route 88 in Farmington Township at 12:40 a.m. Tuesday.

Troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating the crash, which was west of state Route 534.

Charles E. Moats, 46, was pronounced dead. He was driving a pickup truck that sustained heavy front-end damage.

He was westbound on Route 88 when he failed to negotiate a curve and traveled off the right side of the road into a heavily wooded area and struck several trees. Moats was not wearing a safety belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle.

Toxicology results are pending, the patrol said.

Mansion destroyed

NORTH LIMA

The historic Firestone mansion was destroyed by fire Tuesday, the cause of which is being investigated by the state fire marshal’s office.

Beaver Township firefighters responded to a call at 3:44 a.m. to the house on Lipply Road.

“The building was completely gone. The roof was already gone. The second floor had fallen onto the first floor,” Fire Chief Russ Osborne said.

Osborne said the house was unoccupied because the owners were in the process of restoring it.

Assault reported

WARREN

A 27-year-old Homewood Avenue Southeast woman reported that the father of her unborn child punched her in the stomach, pointed a knife at her and threatened to kill her, slapped her and stole her purse.

The woman said the suspect, 35, of Niles, came in through the front door at 4 a.m. Tuesday after moving out earlier that day but still having a key.

The woman said she screamed for the man not to kill her and that she needed an ambulance. The man called a friend to give him a ride and left, she said. Police couldn’t see any injuries on the woman and she refused treatment.
