Pumpkins from Boardman Park’s Pumpkin Carve Out Contest will be on display at the park through Oct. 31.

In the preschool category, Joey Sharpe won first place and Lily Svoboda won second place.

In the kindergarten through fourth-grade category, Jaxon Sherl won first place and Ava Davanzo won second place.

Emily Rutledge won first place and Norah Bush won second place in the fifth- through eighth-grade category.

In the ninth-grade to adult category, Chuck Pangburn won first place. Mark Blakeman and Anne Rutledge tied for second place.

The event took place last weekend.

Raising awareness

Are you tough enough to wear pink? That is the theme for the day at Columbiana Village Schools.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the staff and students are encouraged to wear pink Wednesday.

The district will be taking donations of $1 to raise money for the Joanie Abdu Breast Cancer Center in Youngstown.

Free presentation

LOWELLVILLE

Village police will host a free hour-long presentation on mail fraud and telephone scams at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in city hall, 140 E. Liberty St.

Terence Sullivan, a U.S. postal inspector from Cleveland, will come to the presentation to share the latest information on mail fraud and ways to detect it.

“Letters and phone calls coming from people pretending to be from the IRS seems to be a big problem,” said Police Chief Ryan Bonacci. “We’ve seen a steady increase the last five months with mail fraud and telephone scams.”

Woman reports attempted kidnapping

BOARDMAN

Township police were dispatched to Boardman Park, 375 Boardman-Poland Road, on Friday to investigate a report of an attempted kidnapping.

According to a police report, a woman reported that her 9-year-old daughter was grabbed by a man at the pumpkin display, but that her daughter was able to run away from him.

The child told police that a man turned toward her and grabbed her arm, which is when she ran toward her mom, who was in another part of the pumpkin display.

Officers checked the area for the suspect, but did not find him.

Free health fair

GREENVILLE, PA.

The UPMC Horizon Regional Diabetes Center invites patients with diabetes to a free health fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at UPMC Horizon, Greenville campus, 110 N. Main St., Assembly Rooms A and B (basement).

Refreshments and door prizes will be available.

Lunch and Learn event

YOUNGSTOWN

Today is the deadline to register for this week’s Lunch and Learn event at the YMCA, 25 W. Rayen Ave.

The “To Your Credit” presentation will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday.

Experts from Huntington Bank will show participants how to read a credit report and repair their credit history.

Participants also will learn how to recognize correct errors on their credit report and how to guard against identity theft.

The cost is $10 per person. Lunch is included.

Mobile dentists clinic

STRUTHERS

The Struthers school district will host the Smile Programs mobile dentists clinic from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. today and Wednesday at Struthers Elementary School, 520 Ninth St., for all district students.

The Smile Programs is an on-site dental-care program the provides children with preventive services such as X-rays, dental exams, cleanings, fluoride and sealants.
