Preliminary hearing

HUBBARD

A Thursday preliminary hearing is set in Girard Municipal Court for a man charged with shooting another to death about 10:45 p.m. last Thursday at a Thornton Road home.

Police Chief Todd Coonce said Wesley Williams, 35, is in the Trumbull County Jail on a murder charge for the death of 22-year-old Scott R. Williams of Sharpsville, Pa. The two are not related, Coonce added.

The chief said Wesley Williams is accused of handling a .10-gauge shotgun that went off and hit Scott Williams. Coonce said Wesley Williams claimed he did not know the gun was loaded.

Alcohol was involved, Coonce said.

Alerted to scam

BOARDMAN

An elderly woman nearly lost $3,500 in a scam, according to a police report filed Friday.

The woman told police that someone had contacted her and told her she had won sweepstakes totaling $2.8 million and a BMW, and that she had to send in $3,500 to collect her prize.

The victim gave the person her driver’s license number, Social Security number and a check.

But a bank teller alerted her that it was a scam, so she did not lose any money.
