Raiders to start former YSU safety

ALAMEDA, Calif.

As if the Oakland Raiders’ defensive problems weren’t bad enough, another injury will force them to use a third-stringer at strong safety.

Usama Young left Sunday’s 24-13 loss to Arizona with a significant injury to his left knee. He underwent an MRI on Monday and ESPN reported that he has a torn ACL and MCL in the knee and will miss the rest of the season.

With starter Tyvon Branch already out for the season with a broken foot, the Raiders (0-6) once again are forced to turn back to Brandian Ross (YSU), who struggled in that role last year after Branch got hurt.

Ross was released after training camp this summer and signed with Miami before returning to Oakland late last month.

49ers lose center Daniel Kilgore for year

SANTA CLARA, Calif.

San Francisco 49ers center Daniel Kilgore is scheduled to undergo season-ending surgery Tuesday for a fractured left ankle sustained in the third quarter of Sunday night’s loss at Denver.

Coach Jim Harbaugh says the injury is similar to what nose tackle Ian Williams suffered in Week 2 of the 2013 season at Seattle that required four operations and kept him sidelined until training camp. Kilgore was hurt when linebacker Brandon Marshall inadvertently ran into his lower leg at the end of a run by Frank Gore during a 42-17 loss to the Broncos.

Marcus Martin, a 20-year-old rookie third-round draft pick, is the favorite to fill in for Kilgore on the starting offensive line. Martin recently returned to practice following a training camp knee injury.

Martin’s NFL debut would likely be Nov. 2 at home against the Rams after the bye.

Florida’s season evaluated as it goes

GAINESVILLE, Fla.

Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley says he is evaluating the season — and likely coach Will Muschamp’s future — “as it plays out.”

Foley released a 40-word statement Monday that did little to sway belief Muschamp’s job is in serious jeopardy following consecutive home losses to teams that previously struggled in Southeastern Conference play.

Foley says, “At the beginning of the season we said we would evaluate the season as it plays out. We will continue to do so. Our sole focus right now is supporting our coaching staff and players as they prepare for Georgia.”

The Gators (3-3, 2-3 SEC) are coming off losses to LSU and Missouri. The 42-13 debacle against Mizzou on Saturday night, was one of the most embarrassing losses in Muschamp’s three-plus years in Gainesville.

San Francisco stations ban song ‘Royals’

SAN FRANCISCO

The popular song “Royals” by New Zealand artist Lorde is getting caught up in the fervor over the upcoming World Series between the San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals.

Two San Francisco radio stations say they won’t play the song during the duration of the World Series.

KFOG and KOIT announced the bans last week as the Giants clinched the pennant and headed to the series. KOIT program director Brian Figula said in a statement that listeners called for the ban.

Jim Richards, KFOG’s program director, said they didn’t want to play a song that repeatedly says “Royals” while rooting for the hometown team.

Lorde has told VH1 that a photo of Kansas City Royals Hall of Famer George Brett signing autographs in his uniform helped inspire her song when she saw the word “Royals.”
