Dana music school to mark Octubafest

The Dana School of Music will celebrate Octubafest with a series of events to honor the musical heritage of the tuba and euphonium.

Octubafest will begin with a concert by the U.S. Air Force Band of Flight Wright Brass Quintet on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Bliss Recital Hall on the Youngstown State University campus. The quintet’s program will include popular patriotic fare as well as classical selections from Dvorak, Bach and Gabrieli.

The Dana Brass Quintet, which includes Chris Krummel, trumpet; Stacie Mickens, horn; Daniel Honeycutt, trumpet; Michael Crist, trombone; and Brian Kiser, tuba, also will perform several selections.

Octubafest will continue with a tuba recital Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in Bliss Recital Hall with a program of works by contemporary composers.

Octubafest was established in 1973 by Harvey Philips, professor at Indiana University school of music, as a series of concerts and recitals showcasing the solo and ensemble repertoire for the instruments.
