DoD gives advice on safe use of social media

Coalition military action against extremist terrorist groups in Iraq and Syria warrants renewed emphasis on anti-terrorism and protection measures at Youngstown Air Reserve Station, officials there said.

A recent military intelligence bulletin notes the Islamic State militant group is urging its followers to use social-media sites or phone directory listings to identify home addresses of military personnel and their family members.

The bulletin recommends military personnel take additional precautions regarding home and online profile protection.

The station’s members are asked to remain vigilant and keep an eye out for any potential threats to our installations, facilities, members, their families, our communities and our homeland, said Col. James Dignan, 910th Airlift Wing commander.

Dignan encouraged the 910th’s citizen airmen and other service members living and working in the Mahoning Valley, as well as their families, to maintain awareness while in local community settings or large gatherings and emphasized the current “see something, say something” environment.

“Be vigilant. If you see something or someone suspicious or out of place, then say something. Report the incident to your installation security personnel or the local authorities,” he said.
