Brookdale Senior Living Solutions and MAXIM Healthcare Services are sponsoring a Safe Senior Symposium from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at Clare Bridge, Austintown, 1420 S. Canfield-Niles Road. It is free and open to the public and will provide programs about senior safety hosted by Mahoning County Sherriff’s Department Homesafe registration program. Topics discussed will be senior self-defense, home safety awareness for seniors and caregivers and personal records preparation for emergency situations. The presenter will be Robert Williams, assistant fire chief with Austintown Fire Department. Light refreshments will be served, and there will be door prize drawings. Lordstown S.C.O.P.E. Center, 1776 Salt Springs Road, has planned the following: Tuesdays, free lessons to learn to play bridge from 10 a.m. to noon; Wednesday, game night (all kinds of board games) from 6 to 9 p.m.; Thursdays, bridge from 10 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 2 p.m.; and Nov. 12, book club at 12:30 p.m. to discuss “The Immortal LIfe of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot. The center also is looking for seniors interested in playing penny ante poker, canasta or pinochle. Beginners are welcome, and free lessons will be provided. A group for Mahjongg players is being formed.

Niles S.C.O.P.E. Senior Center, 14 E. State St., has planned a free Pound Party and luncheon on Oct. 28. The Pound Party will contribute nonperishable food and goods to the Niles Community Center Food Pantry in recognition of “Make A Difference Day.” In exchange for one pound of food, seniors will receive a free lunch and participate in Dan’s Drumming drum circle. The luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m. followed by the drum circle from noon to 1 p.m. The center is collecting food now in anticipation of filling fifty bags for the Niles Community Center. To sign up for the free luncheon and the drum circle, call the center and register. Registration is required. The center also will offer a trip to Das Dutch Haus Dinner Theater on Dec. 4 by motorcoach to Columbiana to see the musical “Just Give ‘Em The News.” The cost is $68 and includes transportation from Niles, a sit-down dinner, and the musical show by Ted & Company. There will be approximately one hour of free shopping time at Das Dutch Village before the show. The bus will leave Niles at 10 a.m. and return by 4 p.m. To register for the trip call the center or stop in. There is no age or residency requirements.
