Maplewood boys capture D3 cross country title

Juniors Tristan Dahmen and Allen Sparks finished second and third, respectively, to lead the top-ranked Maplewood boys cross country team to a Division III district title on Saturday at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds.
The Rockets finished with 26 points. Berkshire was second with 78, McDonald third with 86 and Mineral Ridge fourth with 106.
The top four teams and individuals in the top 16 not on a qualifying team advanced to next week’s regional meet at Boardman High School.
Mineral Ridge senior Logan Smith was the individual champion with a time of 15 minutes, 53.18 seconds and his teammate, senior Nathanael Toth, was fourth.
In Division II, Lakeview’s Nate Butler and Max McLeoud were seventh and eighth, respectively, as the Bulldogs placed second with 90 points. Crestwood was first with 38 points, while Poland was third with 97 and Jefferson fourth with 103.
In Division I, Fitch junior Craig Schumacher was ninth as the Falcons finished third with 89 points behind Chardon (54) and Solon (82). Howland (99) was fourth.
On the girls side, McDonald junior Heidi Hoffman won the individual title in 19:44.40 to help the Blue Devils place second in Division III with 35 points. Berkshire was first with 24, while Hawken (83) was third and Mineral Ridge (137) fourth.
In Division II, Poland freshman Maggie Sebest was third to help the Bulldogs finish second with 61 points. Crestwood won with 43 points, while Lakeview was third (80) and Girard fourth (84).
Malone district
South Range senior Jordan Roush placed 13th to help the Raiders finish third at the Malone University district with 97 points behind St. Thomas Aquinas (16), East Canton (68). Rootstown was fourth with 97.
On the girls side, South Range sophomore Xena Maali placed third as the Raiders finished second with 59 points behind Aquinas (39). Jackson-Milton was third (116) and East Canton fourth (119).
