Spartans take 12th at Legends Meet

Neighbors | Submitted.The Boardman boys cross country team recently competed at the Legends Meet at the Trumbull County Fair Grounds. The varsity team took 12th place out of 27 teams.

The Boardman Spartan cross country team finished 12th overall out of 27 teams at the highly competitive Legends Meet at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds.

Host Maplewood won the meet with 76 points, followed by Chardon Notre Dame Cathedral Latin (87), Mt. Lebanon of the Pittsburgh area (113) and Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary’s in fourth (125). AAC rivals Fitch finished fifth with 171, Canfield was nineth with 290, Jefferson Area was 19th with 481 and Ashtabula Lakeside was 20th with 486.

The Spartans placed two runners in the top fifty out of 393 total runners. Senior Nick Long led the team with a 44th place finish in a time of 17:22. He was followed by junior Ethan Schwendeman who was 48th overall in a time of 17:25. Next for Boardman was senior Juan Santiago, who finished the race in 53rd place with a time of 17:34.

Rounding out the varsity for the Spartans was sophomore Nathaniel Ams who finished the race in a time of 18:02, which was good enough for 80th place. Sophomore Nick Digiacomo was 106th overall with a time of 18:26, classmate Chris Butler was 111th in a time of 18:27 and junior Adam Deeley was 131st overall in a time of 18:49.

“I was really unsure of how we would run today, the course was an absolute mess due to the rain the previous two days and the downpour just prior to the start of the varsity race,” said Spartan Head Coach John Phillips. “But we competed hard in spite of the conditions and looked better as a team than the scoring might suggest.”

The Spartan junior varsity team completed their season at The Legends Meet with a fifth place finish and final record of 98-40. They were led by senior Kostas Kasamias (19:16), freshman Matt Moradian (19:51), sophomore Dom Eorio (19:55), freshman Mark Moradian (20:01), senior Dan Liptak (20:04), freshman Nick Lascola (20:12) and freshman Jimmy Lagese (20:18).

Setting a new personal best at the Legends Meet was freshman Luke Hetzel at 20:49. Also setting a new personal record was freshman Matt Moradian at 19:51. That time earned Moradian this weeks BW-3 ‘Runner of the Week’ award.
