Former Buckeye Smith cut from CFL team

MONTREAL

Troy Smith, the Ohio State quarterback who won the 2006 Heisman Trophy, has been released by the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes.

He started the first six games before being placed on the six-game injured list. Montreal sputtered to a 1-5 start before Smith was sidelined with knee, ankle and thumb injuries.

Smith completed 83 of 174 passes for 989 yards and four touchdowns this season. He threw four interceptions. Smith played three regular-season games for Montreal last year and the East Division semifinal.

The Alouettes (6-8) have struggled to find a steady replacement for Anthony Calvillo, who started for more than a decade before retiring last winter. Quarterback Jonathan Crompton led Montreal to a 40-9 win over Saskatchewan last week.

NBA approves changes for instant replay

NEW YORK

The NBA’s Board of Governors has approved several modifications to the league’s instant replay system.

The most notable change announced Thursday night allows officials to use replay only in the last two minutes of overtime. Last year, instant replay was available for use in the entire overtime period.

Referees can also now review plays to determine if a clear-path foul is warranted even if they did not initially call a clear-path foul. Previously a clear-path foul had to be called for the play to be eligible for review.

Referees also will be able to use replay to determine if a foul merits being upgraded to a flagrant foul. Last season, they could only use replay if a flagrant foul was called on the floor.

Player faces suspension for pulling own jersey

SAO PAULO

A Brazilian player is facing a six-game suspension for pulling his own jersey inside the penalty area.

Brazil’s sports tribunal said on Thursday it charged former Brazil striker Leandro Damiao for attempting to lead the referee into awarding his team a penalty kick.

Television images showed Damiao holding his jersey backward while he made a run inside the area in Santos’ 3-0 loss at Criciuma in the Brazilian league on Sunday.

When asked about the play, Damiao denied he was looking for a penalty call, saying his jersey got stuck to his skin and he was trying to get it loose.

Damiao was picked for Brazil’s squad in the 2013 Confederations Cup but didn’t play because of a muscle injury. He played for Brazil in the 2012 Olympic tournament.

Kentucky’s Calipari likes his team’s depth

LEXINGTON, Ky.

Kentucky’s John Calipari says the Wildcats are so deep it feels like he is coaching two teams.

Besides returning six regulars from last year’s NCAA runner-up squad, the Wildcats added four high school All-Americans and begin another season with expectations of another championship.

Their frontcourt returns 7-footers Willie Cauley-Stein and Dakari Johnson, along with forwards Marcus Lee and Alex Poythress.

Twin 6-6 guards Aaron and Andrew Harrison are back with their length, scoring and floor leadership in the backcourt. Add in recruits Karl-Anthony Towns (6-11), Trey Lyles (6-10), Devin Booker and Tyler Ulis, and the Wildcats could have a 12-player rotation.

With so much depth, Calipari vows to employ a platoon system to get the most out of players.

Calipari said during Thursday’s media day, “I’m coaching two different teams.”
