City awards extra $9,800 to contractor to finish sewer project

City officials approved extra funding to finish a storm project.

Canfield City Council unanimously approved an additional $9,800 to finish the Fairview Avenue/Maple Drive stormwater project. The reason the additional funds are needed is because of a water line issue, city officials said at Wednesday’s council meeting.

Councilman Chuck Tieche explained that over the past few days, the contractor found a waterline running through the storm-sewer project. “As a result of that, the waterline needed to be lowered and sort of a last minute deal. ... Why didn’t they know that up front?” Tieche said to council.

The contractor is Ray Bertolini Trucking Inc., and Tetra Tech Inc. is the engineer.

The new sewer line will have to be dropped a few feet to accommodate the waterline.

Councilman John Morvay and Tieche both agreed that they need to vote yes on the additional funds to finish the project, but questioned why the engineer did not know about the waterlines ahead of time.

Morvay said, “I’m certainly not going to hold this project up for $9,800. ... I do understand after talking with Mr. Tieche that there are some improvements that are going to go in here that’s actually going to benefit us, so not all of that cost is for lowering the pipe.”
