Organizations will host Nonna’s sauce cook-off

Rotary Club of Youngs- town and Grow Youngstown are hosting Not Your Nonna’s Sauce cook-off from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 26 at Mount Carmel Church, 343 Via Mount Carmel Ave.

The event is a sauce competition to raise funds for neighborhoods of Grow Youngstown and for the centennial projects of Rotary Club of Youngstown.

There are three sauce categories: Red, based on any naturally red produce such as tomatoes, beets, cherries, peppers etc.; Green, based on green produce such as basil, spinach, chard, escarole, brussels sprouts etc.; and White, based on cheese, nuts, squash, turnips, potatoes and orange-flesh squash.

Tickets are available at the door, at www.growyoungstown.org or by calling 330-743-8630. Ticket holders will receive three servings of pasta and choose from more than 20 sauces. Salad, beverage and dessert are included. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for 10 and under. Additional servings will be $5 each. A $30 ticket for “all-you-can-eat” includes a 10 percent off coupon for Grow Youngstown’s A La Carte store. Tickets for beer and wine will be sold.

Students Motivated by the Arts will provide hands-on activities for children, and music will be provided by Brady’s Leap and Betty Bannon.

Judges for the event are Mayor John McNally, Rich Morgan, Danita Davis, Frank Occhibove and Judge Robert Rusu. Besides a winner in each sauce category, winners will be announced for Sauce Lover’s Choice and Best all Local.
