HUBBARD

At the Hubbard Library on Wednesday morning, a small group of people were getting ready for not just a big event, but a mega one.

There was some action starting to take place in the storage room under the steps, but it wasn’t moving very far or fast as Friends of the Library member Kenny Newell worked patiently in cramped quarters among the boxes of books that would be coming out in preparation for the group’s annual mega book sale next week.

It begins at 9 a.m. Wednesday and continues through 4:45 p.m. Oct. 25 at the library, 436 W. Liberty St. Make note of the start time. It’s different this year.

The collection has been growing all year — books, CDs, DVDs, puzzles, LP records, cassettes, VHS tapes and even office furniture and equipment, said Bonnie Viele, Friends treasurer and book sale chairwoman.

What’s new this year?

VHS tapes will be free. “Most places have phased them out, but a lot of people let their kids put them on a VCR,” Viele said at the library.

Office equipment includes a large electric typewriter and several computer desks, Viele said.

As for the usual?

Diet, health, gardening, history, mystery, horror, humor, how-to, cooking, business, careers, art, travel and all your other interests will be well-represented. There will be plenty of children’s books and a large selection for teenagers.

Hardcover books are $1; paperbacks 25 to 50 cents; CDs and DVDs are $1; and select VHS tapes are 50 cents. Most are free. Puzzles are 50 cents; cassettes 25 cents; records 25 cents; book sets $5, children’s books 25 cents; and oversized paperbacks 50 cents.

Oct. 25 is $2-a-bag day.

Though only a handful of Friends members gathered Wednesday to begin sorting for the sale, about 30 of the 100 members typically help, Viele said.

Last year, the group raised $3,500.

“We should acknowledge the public,” said Friends president Pat Klinich. “They donate the books. Without them, there wouldn’t be an operation.”
