Toledo buying property alongside Jeep plant

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Toledo’s mayor isn’t saying whether land being acquired by the city could be used to make a bid to keep production of the Jeep Wrangler.

The city has bought four acres next to the assembly plant that makes the Jeep Wrangler and Cherokee and has an option to buy another 28 acres.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is looking at moving production of the Wrangler out of Toledo so that it can be made with an aluminum body.

The automaker says the changes needed to make a redesigned Wrangler would be too costly at its current plant in Toledo.

The Blade newspaper in Toledo reports that Fiat Chrysler has not publicly talked about the idea of expanding its assembly plant.
