Boy attacks parents

An 11-year-old city boy was arrested and is being medically evaluated for a pre-existing medical condition from an incident where he attacked his parents over the weekend. He was transported to Akron Children’s Hospital Boardman to be evaluated while police and prosecutors decide on charges because of the boy’s history and medical condition. Mahoning County juvenile justice officials will decide if he is charged with domestic violence.
The 11-year-old was arrested for hitting and kicking his adoptive parents.
His name and medical condition were redacted from the police report.
Tuesday shooting

Police arrested a man in a shooting early Tuesday. Edward Mclane, 26, of Youngstown, was arraigned on a charge of felonious assault later in the day. Reports said officers were called to the area of Dogwood Lane on the East Side at about 12:10 a.m. for a shooting and found drops of blood. The victim, 33-year-old Anthony Johnson of Outlook Avenue, was already at the hospital and told police there that it was Mclane who shot him, reports said. Mclane was spotted at about 2:20 a.m. on Stewart Avenue driving a car, which police pulled over. Mclane was taken into custody and placed in the Mahoning County jail.
Aggravated murder

City police and members of the Mahoning Valley Task Force arrested a Breaden Avenue man Tuesday morning on a warrant for aggravated murder.
When authorities arrived, Michael Wilkins Jr., no age available, and his father, Michael Wilkins Sr., 44, got up from chairs on the porch of a Breaden Avenue home and fled toward the backyard.
Wilkins Sr. was caught in the backyard and charged with possession of drugs after police found a plastic bag containing suspecting marijuana and $187 cash in his pocket.
They found Wilkins Jr. hiding behind a tree on Garfield Avenue. No information was available Tuesday night about the murder Wilkins Jr. is accused of committing. Police also found a revolver along his path of travel. Multiple charges

Police found three needles and a bag of marijuana on a woman they arrested on two warrants at about 3:20 p.m. Monday.
Reports said Heather Upole, 30, of Youngstown, was a passenger in a car pulled over for an expired registration at Erie and Marion avenues. A records check revealed that Upole has the warrants on a charge of walking in the roadway. When police searched her they found the needles, reports said. At the jail when she was changing into jail coveralls, a bag of marijuana was found, reports said. She had possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia added to her charges.

The Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber Board of Directors voted earlier this month to oppose Ohio House Bill 597, which would eliminate the The New Learning Standards/Common Core learning standards in the state’s public schools.
The New Learning Standards/Common Core place greater emphasis on reading, writing, critical thinking, problem-solving and depth of knowledge than Ohio’s current standards, which focus more heavily on memorization.
The new standards aligns Ohio with more than 40 states that have adopted them.
The Ohio Board of Education adopted Common Core in 2010.
Man spits at officer

A Verona Avenue man was taken to the Mahoning County jail after reports said he spit in the face of a police officer Monday afternoon.
Police were called to assist paramedics at a home in the 1100 block of Verona Avenue on the East Side at about 2:10 p.m. trying to treat 35-year-old Peter Brown for low blood sugar. Reports said Brown was very uncooperative and spit at an officer once and missed. He was warned not to do it again, but when officers tried to pick him up to place him in an ambulance, he spit in the face of an officer. Officers did get him cuffed and into an ambulance. When Brown’s sugar was tested in the ambulance and was found to be acceptable, he was arrested on a charge of harassment by inmate and taken to the Mahoning County jail.

The ICU Blockwatch and St. Dominic’s Church will host a Neighborhood Harvest event from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday. It will take place at the gated lot at the corner of Cottage Grove and Auburndale, across from the Horizon Science Academy. Food such as cotton candy and snow cones, as well as music, candy and a bounce-around will be offered. Representatives from the Youngstown police and fire departments, Hubbard, Boardman and Youngstown State University police departments, Ohio State Highway Patrol, emergency response tank, canine units and motorcycles will be present.Guests are asked not to wear costumes. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

The third time was not the charm for a man who police say wrecked his girlfriend’s truck Monday morning.Reports said an officer was sent to the 2700 block of Atkinson Avenue at about 4:25 a.m. and found Quintin Prieto, 30, of Youngstown standing outside a truck that was flipped over on its roof. Reports said Prieto first told officers his girlfriend had been driving and then he admitted he was driving. Prieto had been cited two previous times for driving under suspension and reckless operation by officers on midnight turn that evening. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center to be treated for his injuries and at the hospital a bag of heroin and a bag of marijuana fell out of his pants, reports said. He was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana, possession of heroin and driving under suspension and taken to the Mahoning County jail after he was treated.
Power outage

About 200 Ohio Edison customers on the city’s South Side were without power for a few hours Tuesday night because of downed wires. According to the First Energy Storm Center website, the outage occurred in the area near Oak Hill Avenue about 5 p.m. Crews arrived, corrected the problem and power was restored about 10:30 p.m.
