BOARDMAN

The case of a Boardman man accused of attempted murder, among other felony charges, will go before a grand jury, as Orlando Torres waived his right to a preliminary hearing in court Tuesday morning.

Torres, 58, was arrested Oct. 6 at his residence on the 4500 block of South Avenue after his live-in girlfriend called 911 and reported to officers that Torres punched her in the face multiple times, held a pillow over her face for several minutes, held a knife to her throat and threatened to kill her, according to a police report.

Police dispatchers and officers heard some of the incident unfolding, including a death threat, when the victim called 911 and when police called her to find out where she was, according to the report.

The victim reported to police that after she told Torres she wanted to end the relationship, he pulled her hair, punched her in the face multiple times, threw himself on top of her and punched her in the face about 13 times, placed a pillow over her face for several minutes, then grabbed a knife and held it to her throat, all while repeatedly threatening to kill her.

Torres faces felony charges of attempted murder, domestic violence, kidnapping, felonious assault and disrupting public services.

The kidnapping charge is a first-degree felony.

He appeared in court Oct. 7 for an arraignment, where a judge set his bond at $100,000. He is in the Mahoning County jail.

Mike McBride, an assistant county prosecutor, said he had expected the case to go to a grand jury.
