UPDATE: Man in custody after fleeing and firing at Hubbard officer
HUBBARD
A city police officer was shot at during a foot chase after a traffic stop shortly before noon today, but he was not injured.
After a manhunt that involved several other police departments, police found their suspect in the back yard of a home on Clingan Street.
Hubbard Police Chief Jim Taafe was still piecing information together this afternoon, shortly after two suspects were in custody. Their names and what they will be charged with were not yet available.
Taafe said Patrol Officer D.J. Dripps, who has been with the department full-time for nearly a year, pulled a car over for a minor traffic violation in the parking lot of the Circle K convenience store at 211 W. Liberty St.
There were two men in the car. The driver stayed with the car, Taafe said. But the passenger took off running up Hager Street behind the store.
Dripps chased him, Taafe said, and the man fired between three and seven shots at the officer.
After that, Dripps ducked for cover and lost sight of the suspect, who dropped down in some weeds and took off his hoodie and his pants, Taafe said.
Police set up a perimeter and caught him as he was running through the back yard on Clingan Street. Homeowner Vicki Bednar said she watched out her window as the man saw police on nearby Tylee Lane and dropped down to the ground to surrender at about 12:07 p.m.
